Video of R. Norton 650 lbs board press

Not sure how the board press correlates to a regular bench press and the arching of the back to push it up might be a bit questionable, but it still seems pretty impressive. The guys on the team sure think it is.

Drive through his heels was great, but you're right ab his back. Board press is just pushing dead weight, no bounce off the chest the board prevents it. Very impressive, that's a lot of weight

actually , floor press is much easier than a traditional bench press . It focuses on advancing mostly triceps and rear dealt .With that being said , that's friggin 650!! I don't care what kind of way you press it, that's a hellll of a alot of weight .

At 4 you can do the heaviest wt. you are supposed to sink the bar into the boards with a slight pause. This helps you to fight thru those sticking points when you do regular bench. Coach b basically has an 8 week program where one day is for speed (chains and bands with lighter wt) and one day with reg bench or board press with heavier wt. I have personally seen a 700lb board press from an OL (justin Geisinger). I know his program has changed some since I worked with him a while ago but it's and awesome way to get stronger and be more explosive. Use the same principals with squat.

With the much taller offensive lineman with long arms the bench press isn't a good measure of overall strength. The bench press favors players with shorter more compact build like the offensive lineman in the 70's and early 80's before they changed the blocking rules and allowed lineman to extend their arms. Today's lineman need a good base and a powerful lower body for pass blocking.
Look at Battle he's 6'7" 319lbs and I bet he couldn't do more than 25 reps in the 235 bench press and we have DB who can do more, but he's a 5th round NFL draft pick.

Sources have said Battle routinely did 30+ reps @ 225 lbs

on the bench during practice sessions in spite of his his long arms. Supposedly only the arm cramp prevented him from doing so during his pro day.

I find that hard to believe. If he only did 12 why didn't he just take a break and do it again. Hit 20 something.

Maybe he can, I don't know. My point was you don't need to bench 500 plus lbs to be a very good offensive lineman. With NFL teams passing 60% of the time pass blocking is the key. This requires a strong lower body, quick feet, good balance, and long arms.

Look at the lack of flex on the spotter. He's not lifting anything. He's making sure 650 pounds doesn't fall on a possibly starting OL man.

I don't think he helped

His biceps never really flexed. He was maintaining a tight grip on the bar in case he needed to. That was an impressive lift

He definitely helped, just touching the bar helps...but

He definitely helped, just holding onto the bar helps the stabilizing muscles, and makes it a little easier...but its 650 lbs. That's impressive no matter what...that's like bench pressing 4 averaged sized human beings!

Love to see this. Kid's busting his rump. However, like another poster mentioned above, his lack of upper body strength wasn't causing him to consistently get pushed into the backfield. It was his inability to "stand his ground," aka lower body strength. Show me a video of him squating 650 and my summer will have been made. Would be 100% more fired up about this season if I saw his liwer body strength match his upper.

the spotter.
Plus, what good does it do to lift that much, if you can't do it alone, seriously.
