If that's our most likely bowl opponent. Gotta think a good number will enter the portal with them being without their coach and a conference.

I don’t think you can transfer twice in two years, they were saying thats why Deion won’t be able to leave colorado if he wants to coach his sons.

Maybe it changes if your coach takes another job, unsure

Interesting he is leaving his alma mater at Oregon State. It's tough with the Beavers left behind as one of only 2 members of Pac 12 remaining. He is used to being second fiddle in his home state (Oregon vs. Oregon State and now Michigan vs. Michigan State).

It is odd, he qbed their best season there too. It would be like if Deshaun or Trevor became our head coach then left for another job. That realignment really screwing oregon state

No doubt about it. The Beavers are getting screwed. I'm sure that they're pretty sore about it, when you're used by 10 members, you would expect them to be.

I'm sure that's tough for him but Oregon State

Jonathan Smith was an Oregon State alum who was very successful as a QB there. As head coach, he completely turned the program around and now he's gone off to greener pastures (literally, in a couple of ways).

Oregon State athletics got left in the dumpster by the Pac 12's disintegration and I don't blame him for leaving. I expect most the promising players on their roster will hit the transfer portal.

Not a good time for Beavers fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hate it for OSU. I am an alum and a fan. Left for dead by UO.

The recruiting pitch is going to be harder than ever. But…it’s the largest school in the state, military heritage, agricultural base, one of only two land, sea, space, air, and space grant schools in the nation. Awesome college town, updated stadium is small, but fantastic.

I would take the job and we would win, at a fraction of what they will pay to their next HC.

I was a Clemson student during Dabo’s first year as an assistant - would I be lying if I said I was from his coaching tree?

Michigan State is essentially the Kentucky of the B1G. Good basketball. Football is now questionable, and I think it's uncertain if MSU can make the step to the consistent level of Michigan or PSU or the OSU. No one else has.

Maybe the Mountain West is a good place to rebuild.

He had to go somewhere. Beavers are a mountain West Team now.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why did he have to go somewhere? Was his $31M contract not enough?

He left when they needed him the most - he didn’t “have to do” anything. He was set for life financially and at his alma mater.

He could have stuck it out and helped guide them thru their uncertain future, but he took the easier road.

And they are not in the MWC.

WSU and OSU are in sole control of the PAC - whatever that might be going forward.

The school needed him the most when he went there 5 years ago and gave them a great run before the program becomes completely irrelevant.

He didn't want to take what would have been a demotion.

Lastly, this isn't just about money. He's only 44 years-old and has a long career in front of him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you ever been to Corvallis or the State of Oregon?

They will never be irrelevant.

Excellent facilities and a better stadium than anything in East Lansing. California is full of talent to recruit.

At a young 44 YO, it does speak to his ego and his emotional insecurities about being able to lead them thru an incredibly difficult time and continuing to advance in the coaching profession.

Thank God Dabo doesn’t think that way or he would have left a long time ago to a better conference, bigger “blue blood” program, etc

Psychoanalyzing a person you haven't even met and know nothing about. That is delusional stuff.

He took a broken program at a very difficult time, completely transformed the culture and won some games in the process.

Unlike you, Beavers fans are thankful for what he did, wish him the best and have no hard feelings toward Jonathan Smith at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What Beavs fans you talking to? I was there 3x this year.

What do his actions say?

It’s not psychoanalysis, it’s the truth.

The OSU AD has been adamant that they would up his contract and do everything they could to keep him.

What are his players supposed to do - should they enter the Portal and hope for the best? HC JS repeatedly told them during the course of the season, a season in which they found out that they no longer have a conference, do just stay focused on the here and now.

Clearly, HC JS wasn’t. He resigned less than 24 hours after the season ended.

His "actions" were to leave for a better opportunity, which is what people do. That is all. Your so-called "truth" about him being "emotionally insecure" is nonsense you made up and want to believe.

What else was he going to tell the players? They had no choice but to stay focused and do the best they could this season. Now they have the chance to make their own decisions just like he did.

You are just an ungrateful fan who doesn't appreciate what Jonathan Smith gave to the program as a player and coach. I don't feel bad for the few OSU fans that are like you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Im sure glad Dabo has not left for any better opportunities.

HC JS was a walk-on at OSU. They gave him a chance to succeed and he did so.

Later, OSU gave him a chance to be a HC and he took and was successful.

OSU got left behind in conference realignment, he was promised a new contract and support to guide them…and HC JS left them for an easier path at a middling program in a cash rich conference.

He was a OSU product, one of their greatest players (led them, as a walk-on, to an 11-1 in 2000).

He was making $5M at the school that gave him a chance as player and then again as a coach. He had a $30M contract.

He didn’t go to USC or Michigan or ND or Texas…he went to MSU - the first available life raft in a time of crisis, leaving his players (including DJU), with no course of action.

He left because he didn’t want to, or didn’t think he could, lead them at a time when they didn’t have a conference, didn’t have a schedule, budget was about to be slashed.

Those are facts.

Again, what Beavs fans are you talking to?

I have a degree from OSU and was there 3x this year.

People can be grateful AND be hurt by the way HC JS left the program.

In the same way that Coastal Carolina will never be Clemson, Oregon State will never be Oregon with the conference realignment. It's as simple as that. Nothing else you said counts.
