My guess is they were trying to back it down before impact, and there's basically no steering at that point even with a rudder. Who knows where the bow is going to go, add wind and current to the mix it's not surprising it made that turn. I bet they also dropped the anchor that exacerbated the problem.

My understanding is it's basically a miracle that a lot of these container ships

are even still operational due to all of the deferred maintenance. They run them hard and put off any and all scheduled maintenance in an effort to reduce costs. I've always found it curious that many of them are running a single screw, I'm no marine engineer but I know guys who go to twins once they get into boats over 26' or so just for redundancy and maneuverability. Yet somehow a skyscraper sized container ship is only running a single engine.

Boeing planes ######## the bed, container ships losing power and destroying bridges, trains derailing causing massive chemical spills...What's next? That Tesla did kill that Chinese woman, and I just found out I've got to pull the motor in my boat to replace a plastic fitting. These are all undoubtedly correlated events that we can blame shoddy engineers for.

What do they care?
Short sided planning for quick profit/increased stock value is killing America. Long range planning has slipped from 10 years, to 4 years, to next quarter.
Soon LRP will be next week.

Is that not a draw bridge? No way out of the harbor without passing under it. Not enough time to raise it, perhaps?

and forgot to raise the bridge. But the horn on the boat didn't work due to Biden-era funding cuts. They tried flashing the high beams but the dude was facing the wrong direction. They hit the bridge in the "soft spot" (think Death Star) in million-to-1 odds, and it took down the whole thing. The boat captain was a DEI hire so it's a little touchy.

Some Twitter folks made a good observation
Mar 26, 2024, 3:39 PM
|
|
There were NO BARRIERS around the bridge supports, unlike many other large span bridges. In fact, they had protective barriers around telephone poles in the bay near the bridge, yet the bridge supports had zero protection.
A bridge with protection around the supports:
The bridge that just fell....no protection:
And finally, the picture showing protection for electrical poles, but again, nothing for the bridge supports.
