Then saw what a car payment would look like at 36mo at current interest rates, even with a decent trade in.

The 'bru only has 83k miles on it, so I was thinking of selling it to squeeze out as much value as I can, but the interest rates right now would be like burning a pile of cash, especially compared to no car payment.

My daily "commute" is also about 5 miles, so also hard to justify taking on a car payment for it to sit in the garage.

2003 Camry I bought new. It only has 137k miles on it, and runs and drives like a new car. Everything on it works, and I'd drive it to California tomorrow without hesitation. Every time I get the fever, and start looking at new cars, I come to my senses and and go "What the hayull am I thinking?". The old Camry probably needs a paint job, but it's had most typical things replaced that wear out over 20 years. Buying a new one when there is nothing wrong with this one would be madness at this point. It will probably outlast me.

You sound like me. I may not finance my next one (depending on rates), but I really don't need a car. The bus stop is at the end of my street and it puts me two blocks from work. I have 3 grocery stores less than a mile away. We have two trains that will take us to the fun districts. I have been on board with public transportation for a while.

Multiple reasons, all unfortunate.

-Fuel economy standards (and the advent of common wind tunnel testing to optimize body shapes

-Crash Test standards and the universal realization that certain shapes absorb impacts to ace the tests better than others

-Really, really stupid pedestrian impact standards which pretty much eliminated wedge shapes, low hoods, and pop-up headlights.

All have combined to give us the same generically styled blob cars that have to meet the multiple masters that the govt has put on them.

2015 tundra, could realllllllly use a full/crew cab. bought the extended cab (still 4 door) back before I had kids. paid for, reliable, etc. ... just can't bring myself to forking over $70k for a truck.

kid hauler, like I've documented, we're just going to buy out our lease. cheapest option.

I actually ran the numbers...and this is wild. residual value + $ down for lease + 36 lease payments is STILL cheaper than a comparable new car. by about $5k

both are Toyotas pre motor overhauls so they'll last forever.

if we get another baby in the oven then we'll have to expand, a la Chassman15, but we ain't even pre-heated the oven yet so we got time.

to be fair, the truck I want is $64k....but w/ taxes and #### here, that'll clear 70. and that's just the same model truck I have now (Tundra Limited) w/ the big crew cab.

so yeah, I'll drive mine till she breaks....OR....I might look at the 2020/2021s (last year they still had the V8). either way, I'm not doing jack shid until this economy bottoms out and people start spending money again.

We bought ours around the same time and I think you got the same XLT I did, other than engine.

Sticker on mine was $54-55k and I got it for $42, which I was really happy with.

If I’m mistaken and you got the construction crew model with vinyl flooring and 2wd, please accept my full apologies, as $35 was very doable.

it would certainly be 70k plus. The main thing "missing" from mine is that beeper to tell me if I'm about to hit something in front of me. I've got one for like high speed circumstances, but I need one for parking garages and my house. I'd also have liked the deal where I can just open my door with the key in my pocket, but that really isn't worth more than $40 to me.

Needed more space for kids/camping compared to the cars I've been driving over past 20 years. But still wanted a fun drive and not too big.

GV70 and X3 were final two choices. Been driving BMW for years and finally switched it up as the GV70 is way better looking and had more upgrades at lower price. TBD if this fancy 'Hyundai' will last 5-7 years.

Been enjoying it for the past month. Red interior is starting to grow on me.

Then couldn't beat the interest rate on the Toyota corolla I purchased for my 16 yr old daughter at 0% for 12 month from my MIL. It was 5k and she was mad I wouldn't pay her in full lol. I was like nope I'll pay you over 12 months.

Put a new car payment

2

Mar 18, 2024, 6:35 AM
Reply

Into a car account and wait 2 or 3 more years. Then you will have enough saved or close to enough saved fot a new car. Find a car with 0 to 2 percent financing and use the money saved to pay or help lower your next car payment. Do it again after that car is paid for.

Ive been doing that for almost 30 years. My car payment now is 2300 a month, but I could have paid cash. They tried to short me on the trade in so I said no thanks. That added about 500 a month but I didnt care.

0 down, 1.9 percent interest, the internet marked off price and none of their stupid after sale add ons, none of those ever.

After 3 years its paid for and Ill keep saving the payment and the car fund will grow.

I alternate every 3 years either my wife gets a new car or I do. So the car we are driving is 6 years old. We keep the 9 year old car as our spare. Now I have two spares because I wanted to keep a 4 wheel dr truck for a spare too.

Im also at the age where driving a nice car is important. Comfort matters more than anything.
