What age did it go downhill for you?

10

Jun 28, 2023, 12:26 PM

😂

Just wondering who all has stayed healthy after their 20s, but has had to deal with healthy food. And who all gave up and didn’t care.

It’s hardest during football season. I don’t know what the he** it is, but the hunger just goes through the roof in the Fall.

I'm 57, but what you would call a physical specimen. In fact, I'm stronger than the average American male.

That’s harder to do than even sticking to working out. But I guess as long as you’re doing it consistently, you can be a little lenient with eating. Until a certain age.

That’s where it goes downhill for many. When you get to the age where pounds just don’t come off.

I don't necessarily eat "healthy" - but I definitely have

some portion control. For me - it took about 2-3 weeks of having to fight through "eating less". But then, I guess your stomach shrinks - and it doesn't take nearly as much to get full.

The easiest way to eat less is to cut out the sugar and starchy carbs

3

Jun 28, 2023, 8:23 PM [ in reply to I don't necessarily eat "healthy" - but I definitely have ]

and eat more high fat meats...you will feel full much quicker and thus eat less. Plus, getting rid of the sugar and starchy carbs is a tremendous health benefit!

I've done this for about 2 months and have lost 20 pounds!

9

Jun 28, 2023, 12:56 PM

There is much more than just a mere 10 years difference going from 40 to 50 and then from 50 to 60.

While I'm still very healthy, the biggest issue is that it takes longer for me to recover from...well...pretty much everything. The days of running any significant amount or distance, or playing in alumni soccer games are now behind me. The old knees just won't tolerate it anymore.

Re: I will tell you this...

Respectfully, what does it actually feel like when your knees and other parts can’t be used so much anymore.

Does it hurt, do they just feel weak, what is it?

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It doesn't really hurt to run...

3

Jun 28, 2023, 1:05 PM

it's the soreness and stiffness afterward that's the problem.

Plyometrics are out of the question. I can't do lunges or squats like I used to.

Re: It doesn't really hurt to run...

5

Jun 28, 2023, 3:19 PM

Yep. It’s long term wear and tear. I played a LOT of basketball until I was about 45 and it just took too long to recover from sprains and strains. I tore my bicep and that was the final straw. I’m 60 now and still have my weight under control but something hurts daily, usually my left hip and/or knee. Or lower back. I don’t run at all anymore but I will hike 5-8 miles in the mountains during the spring before it gets too hot. Can’t eat pasta and bread and desserts like I used to but still do sometimes. As long as they don’t make me quit drinking beer I think I’ll be ok.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hear ya brother !!!

2

Jun 28, 2023, 3:29 PM

I’m 60 now as well, my health and my weight are good. My daily aches and pains are usually in my lower back, my knees, and my shoulder. Like you, I still hike and backpack, but traversing down a steep incline (e.g., the Foothills Trail to Virginia Hawkins Falls) is a little uncomfortable on the knees, especially with a heavy backpack. I still eat pretty much anything I want, but in moderation. Beer is a given and should be its own food group.

I turned 82 earlier this month and certainly can’t do everything I once did but I’m in a much better physical state that most younger guys I know. As you age your body aches a little more often and your reflexes aren’t as good but if you give up living… you’re done!
I must admit that the three plus hour trip to Death Valley isn’t as much fun as it once was but you can bet your sweet &$$ I’ll be on the road come September. Age should not permit you from being a Clemson Man! Go Tigers

Still going strong at 49. Very strict diet of mainly fruits and vegetables. Meat maybe once or twice a week. Exercise 1 hour every day and long bike rides on the weekends. Can still bench press my body weight. Drink tons of water, no sugar, very little alcohol (except during Clemson football games, unfortunately) my girlfriend and I do 30 minutes of yoga every morning at 6 AM. This keeps the body limber amd from seizing up because of all the biking and weightlifting. I'm not bragging, I'm just stating it's very possible to stay active and healthy way past your 20s

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great question

1

Jun 29, 2023, 9:43 AM

I have stayed healthy and strong as the years have passed. Diet, exercise, and making good choices.

- Our health is our GREATEST asset, especially as we age

- Good health impact’s EVERYTHING

- Food is nothing more than FUEL. Period

- Exercise is the ONLY miracle drug

- The human body is the most HONEST thing on earth - it never lies

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Great question

Jun 29, 2023, 11:41 PM

Laughing is another miracle drug in my opinion. Scientifically proven with all the connections of endorphins and stuff.

But yeah you’re right.

Everyone’s different, but when you even start into your 20s, you hold onto weight more every year. Right around that time I have had to figure out how much exercise is good for myself.

If I go too hard for too long, I eat and gain it all back. And then you can lose it slowly, which is the one thing I’ve had to accept.

Going slow is the only way that works. You can be lenient with food this way. A couple of things a day here and there is then okay this way.

Makes life suck in this way, but it is what it is.

I'm 56. Depends on what you call downhill.

Threw out my back for first time around 30 when I was in grad school. Had been out of weight room for a spell and really got hurt warming up for squats. Can still talk to me bit I've not thrown it out in several years. Exercise alleviated things.

A few years back I started drinking. It snuck up on me. I was still lifting and getting stronger but got way too big. Once I realized I was going overboard I pretty much teetotalled for about 6 months, added in more cardio and results followed.

Knees have hurt since I can remember but Hokas have allowed me to run again with minimal discomfort. I am a little scared to squat and deadlift now because of knees... if I'm wearing them out I'd rather do so doing cardio.

Energy level has dropped, but doing weight has helped.

I'm strong, vitals are good but all that talk about pain lasting longer is no joke. Ibuprofen helps.

I started noticing things in 30s, but there is still plenty to work with and I'm not ready to give up.

I'm 75, a 1970 alum, and it has not started going downhill for me yet, thank God! All my closest friends are developing health problems, some are overweight, and none of them exercise. I feel great, as though I was a good 50, and can attribute it to regularly exercising 5 days a week, eating a well rounded diet of fruits, vegetables, and fish, while remaining active in all areas of my life. I am semi-retired from a 43 year practice of architecture and church planning but am still doing selective consulting, am contemplating writing a book, keep active with family and close friends, and am remaining active in my local church in walking along side and ministering to individuals, couples, and families who may be struggling with in-life crises!

The Lord is leading me forward here following the loss of my beautiful wife, best friend in this world, and a mental health practitioner in her own right two and one-half years ago after supporting her through a three and one-half year cancer walk.

I know that if I stop with this lifestyle now I will age overnight and go downhill. I will not let that ever happen!
