In my family the adults have jobs and buy stuff when we need or want it. Adult presents are either things we buy for ourselves and wrap so that the kids see us getting presents from Santa or cheap obligatory gifts. Some of you actually get a pile of swag?

And don't want much. My wife and I have pretty much stopped getting gifts at all for each other.

I still buy my family presents, Red, her family, bosses.
I feel like I can still ask for certain things when I need them around the holiday season.

After that, I have my brother in law and my three nephews.
After that, 6 hours separates the rest of my family and me.

either of my parents. (I have a half sister that my dad doesn't interact with and step-sister that my mom doesn't interact with) My dad is an awesome dad who much prefers providing to show love than using crappy words. Last year he went big time on Raiders vs Panther tickets. My dad is not allowed to be in charge of tickets to events again because those things cost too much.

Yes, very much so. We believe that Christmas is....

a celebration of the gift of Christ given to us by God and in that spirit, and to celebrate, we give gifts to each other.
[not suggesting not giving of gifts to adults is any "less Christian" or anything]

I would imagine that's what makes it about more than just the kids for some folks, though.

I can't decide whether it's that way because the kids like it or because the adults like watching the kids like it so much

As a bloodthirsty warlord bent on world domination, I expect to be showered with rare and expensive gifts all year, not just during the holiday season.

spending the money when there's "other stuff" that needs bought (like "groceries" and "gas for the car"). Not that it matters, because if the wife buys it for me, that money all comes out of the same bucket...
