Harbaugh responsible for Michigan's loss

Oct 18, 2015, 9:44 PM

I finally got a chance to watch the replay of the end of the Michigan - Michigan State game. Horrible clock management by Harbaugh cost Michigan the game. Michigan had two time outs and Michigan State had none on the last series. On second down, Harbaugh lets the play clock go to 1 and calls a time out. On third down, Harbaugh elects not to use his last time out and the ball is snapped with 11 seconds on the play clock. On fourth down, Harbaugh lets the play clock go to 1 and calls his last time out. There are 10 seconds left on the clock. If he had used his last time out on third down and let the play clock expire on fourth down, either the game would have been over or there would have been only a couple of seconds left on the clock. Just enough time to go into the victory formation and left the quarterback hesitate and then take a knee. Yet, I've heard no one in the media talk about Harbaugh's obvious mismanagement of the clock. Is he as immune to criticism as is the Old Ball Coach?

Thanks for pointing this out. I get very frustrated with the XM Radio channel that has Rick Neuheisel (sp) who seems to laud Harbaugh. To put it in RN's words, "there's just no question" it was stupidity displayed at its finest, in regards to Harbaugh's decision. I have no dog in this fight between MSU and Michigan, but just saying. (this is the same network who lauds the secHEAT in about everthing).

"You can't expect a player at this level to know he only needed to fall on the ball for the win."

I say, if a coach sees there's even the slightest chance of kicking that deep in your own territory that late in a game with a three point or better lead and doesn't instruct his kicker on how to deal with a passed ball then he deserves to be tarred and feathered.

Unless the coaches have practices dealing with weird situations then instruct players before the play the issue is all on the coaching staff, bottom to top.

NOT to mention the fact that M st KNOWS the ONLY chance

to POWER BLITZ and look for a block

THEY even said this - said they didn't care if they roughed the kicker - it was the only play left in book

The fact that the Mich coaches didn't go over this makes them culpable

I dont understand that breakdown at all -

The ball was snapped with 11 secs on the playclock because it was after a timeout which meant the gameclock wasnt running.

1st down - run the ball - Mich St called a TO
2nd down - run the ball - Mich called a TO with 1 sec on the playclock
3rd down - run the ball - Mich called a TO with 1 sec on the playclock.

On 4th down there were 10secs instead of 8secs had he let the clock expire on 2nd and 3rd down. Still too much time to snap the ball and run it out by scrambling or throwing it high and far. I dont disagree at all with his clock management.

I see million dollar coaches unable to manage the clock every week. My favorite is when a team is behind and they let the clock run 15 seconds and then call a timeout. It's not rocket science!
