Guys, someone with more football knowledge than me , please answer this question

I just listened to David hoods podcast -which was insightful -Why would our coaching staff offer a quarterback -Who may be an elite talent -but doesn’t fit our rpo system that we run? Seems to be the last few years we’ve been constantly trying to fit a square peg in a round hole although there have been flashes of greatness

The percentage of RPOs is rather small from our offense, so a HS QB does not have to come from the same system.

I don't think DJ ran much RPO in HS, so you may have a point there.

However, I think that almost all HS QBs have some running skills. Even if they're limited in their own running ability, they can still execute an RPO as a straight hand off or pull & throw.

Most true dual threat QBs are not great passers. KB2 is a good example. Also note our QBs throw a ton more than than then the run so passing skills are much more important. We don’t really want a WB running the ball 20x per game as they can’t stay healthy. So the best mix is an outstanding passer who is a good enough runner to keep the D honest. DJs running skills at the lower body weight were adequate as his issues were not related to the style of offense

I have to disagree with your statement...most RPO's are multitalented and can be great passers...Manzel, Burrow, Travis, Maye are all great passers and you can name many more...Kansas City QB is the perfect example...potentially the age of the old drop back pocket passer is fading and new newest idea of a way to spread a defense thin is on us...it's not just RPO only it's a whole host of options based on how the defense presents itself...Clemson is actually one of the causes of this phenom...our quick & fast defensive lines made more than a few pocket passers uncomfortable but a key is the ability to process what is happening on a time intensive scale...someone with Cades' talent can turn those nine boxes that the defense has to cover into nine coffins! He made it look so simple in Charlotte and did the same thing for 3 years in HS...nothing has changed except Dabo & Streeter and they now have a super tool to win championships and as Cade gets stronger and more comfortable so will Clemson fans!

***sigh…I wish “football people” would learn the difference between RPO and zone read***
