This is a great and funny interview by Milburn Stone (Doc Adams) of Ken Curtis (Festus). The contrast of Ken Curtis doing his normal voice vs. the Festus voice is amazing.

Ken Curtis was a great western actor, who was in the Searchers and the Alamo to name two. The youtube following the interview shows the 7 characters he played on Gunsmoke before Festus.

Very cool. Thanks for posting that. I binged watched some Gunsmoke a few months back and had forgotten how fantastic so many of the shows were. Many of them I hadn't seen since I sat on my grandma's lap in her rocker, in front of her back and white TV, so a lot of the greatness went right over my head at that age.

One that caught my attention was an army officer who is charged with bringing in a deserter. A simple enough premise, till you learn the deserter is his son. Is his loyalty to the law, or to his family? That's akin to the dilemmas of High Noon and Le Mis...is defending the law worth it, when confronted with other issues? So many other great episodes with similar moral, ethical, or value judgements.

I had a conversation with a friend right after that binge watch on the quality of TV, and it occurred to us that although there is far, far more variety today, back then the limited access meant that to even get on TV you had to be really, really good. Sort of like a restaurant - you don't make it unless you offer something the people want, and at a very high quality level. There's just too much other competition out there. A TV show simply doesn't make it 20 years on air unless it's one of the very best, and Gunsmoke is.

The implied relationship between Dillon and Kitty in the early ones was fun. In one, she says to someone who needs something done: "I have some influence with the sheriff."

Doc sorta has the speech cadence of another great one, Keith Jackson.

I can't believe no one took me up on the offer to send them that entire series.
