GT's lobbyist

May 23, 2012, 12:16 PM

I don't post often, but I thought I would add this piece of relevant info that I received today from a friend in Atlanta. This fella worked several years in the GT AD and recently left, but still has lots of friends there and he has spoken with many of them about the potential Big12 move.

The interesting thing he highlighted from several conversations is the fact that GT has attempted to enlist the aid of ESPN in placing leverage on Big12 schools to consider them over Clemson as the 12th team. He cites the ongoing "unique" relationship with GT and ESPN and that the network has a strong voice in who is taken.

Basically, GT does what it is told by ESPN (Thursday games, advertising assists, logo and mascot requests, etc.) and ESPN appreciates the level of influence they have. He claims they operate more on the "pro team" model since that is their market and Clemson pushes back on ESPN on too many things. As a college team, their claim goes, Clemson is too concerened with appeasing its fan base and alumni and that has been voiced to the network via the ACC as well.

Take it for what it's worth folks, as this does constitute third hand info, but I found it interesting to say the least.

They are desperately trying to weasel in and throwing us under the bus. Meanwhile we've supposedly been in contact for more than 6 months. Effing Nerds!

Georgia Tech is to FSU and Clemson as Texas Tech is to Oklahoma and Texas

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No one has, nor ever will care about watching GT Play Fball

End of discussion

well...IF clemson and fsu are holding hands...as speculated...and fsu is the largest draw...they may have to take CU or no FSU...that leaves GT outside looking in

I can't see Tech being appealiing more than.....

May 23, 2012, 12:22 PM

us to another conference - we have a much bigger fanbase, etc. I don't think their relationship with ESPN will be the deciding factor with the B12 or anyone else.

Yet in the Atlanta Paper today, the GaT AD told a booster meeting, "that while there are things to be changed, we are solidly in support ofthe ACC as well as all other schools in the conference"

I've been anti GT ever since this wheel spun

May 23, 2012, 12:36 PM

All the Tiger fans piling on wanting them to come along was wrong from the get go. Those geeks are trying to sell what they did in the 60's compared to what little they offer today?

What about their fresh 4 year probation? Let's forget about that?

What about their terrible local tv ratings week after week during football season? The ratings are terrible and that is a fact.

Poor fan following? Not to mention terrible in basketball and baseball. I don't want to help those bastarddds. They deep down would spit on Clemson if they had the opportunity. I have no sympathy for them. I care about CU succeeding and be careful of what you ask for. They are back stabbers.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where do you get the low weekly tv ratings for GT?

May 23, 2012, 12:38 PM

Would love to see and send to some folks.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

AJC has ratings every post week

May 23, 2012, 12:44 PM

It's called the neilson ratings or something. They show it the following week but I doubt they have it in archives. It is in the PAPER version I know.

If that's the best arguement he can muster I hope they aren't paying him much.

Taking GT instead of Clemson would be stupid

May 23, 2012, 2:24 PM

GT barely causes a hicup in traffic on the thursday night games they play. Only in theory does GT bring the Atlanta market.

Taking Clemson AND GT would be incredibly smart though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the key to this whole thing is the FSU/Clem partner

May 23, 2012, 4:12 PM

ship.

We have to stick with each other. FSU wouldn't want GT, imo. FSU competes against us and the SEC for recruits, not much with GT.

I kind of hope GT and UNC get stuck in crapsville from the whole deal. GT has passed Uga on my hate list.

May 23, 2012, 4:30 PM

ESPN won't have that much influence on Big 12 decisions. Each school has an equal vote and I'm not hearing of any voting blocks. Both Clemson & Ga Tech are listed in our new TV contract as teams of value so it's a wash.

Clemson is a much bigger brand name in the Big 12 States and has nothing to worry about. Of course I have no inside info but just looking at this logically. Perhaps there's a reason Ga Tech thinks they need some additional help and that's the real news in this post.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am glad Clemson IS NOT a lapdog of ESPN !

May 23, 2012, 4:35 PM

ESPN are Socialists! Bet they give money to Obama! (President Obama)
