Brad Brownell just bought himself at least 3 more years as Clemson's Head Basketball coach after the elite 8 finish. Nevertheless, after 17 years in a program, the hierarchy always determines if you haven't won an ACC conference title or a ACC tournament title, and no final fours, the act gets pretty old. The major reason that Brownell has been able to hang around as long as he has is because Clemson has NO real basketball legacy nationwide. This hoops program hasn't won anything in it's history. So it makes it easy for a coach like BB to do just enough to keep his job. He's not filling any legendary shoes to follow. Do you think UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke or UCLA would allow a guy to stick around after 14 years and NO conference title? NO way. He would have been gone after 5 years. Tennessee just fired their women's coach after 5 seasons because she couldn't fill Pat Summit's shoes. (By the way, Summit won 6 National Titles and a truckload of Final Fours). She won 105 games over those 5 years, but never went to a Final Four. Tennessee women's basketball is spoiled by Summit's successful 38 years. Connecticut women's basketball WILL go through the same thing after Geno Auriemma retires (He's 70 and out of gas now) and he won't win anymore Nattys. He's won 11 National Titles, but you can't rule forever. The next person that takes over that program will have 3-5 years to win, or it's curtains. So, in Brad Brownell's case, he found the RIGHT place to be a Head Coach. Clemson. This particular hoops program is kind of joke in College Basketball, and has been for decades. Therefore, an Elite Eight berth is BIG news, especially since it has never occurred. This why Brad Brownell been at Clemson for so long. He's figured it all out. Just win enough games (.500 average) without winning any conference titles, sneaking your way into the NCAA by default, and somehow getting lucky enough to get to a Sweet 16, or Elite Eight berth. It will get old in a few more years, because the percentages of him taking Clemson to another Elite 8 are very slim within the next 3-5 years. it is hard to duplicate among the very good coaches in college basketball, let alone the average ones. This is my take on Clemson's basketball plight that they are submerged in. They are stuck in the mire of a guy that understands how to play the system, knowing he will never take them to national prominence.
