Ideas for soccer tie-breaker other than PKs?

I can't stand games being decided by PKs, especially big games like a conference championship. I like the two 10 minute OT periods, but after that, there needs to be something better.

I've always liked the way college football does OT. The only thing I can think of that soccer could do along those lines would be set pieces. Each team starts with a corner kick, and they get one or two minutes to convert or for the defense to take possession. They alternate to the other team, and then as they need to keep going, they rotate around the 18 and, if needed, end up back at the other corner, with each team getting a shot from the same position until one wins. This way, the whole team is involved, and it's not just a lucky guess from the keeper or a bad boot by the shooter.

Thoughts on this or any other options?

Which, sure, is plenty of time. But it’s not like they are an integral part of the game to start with, it’s not like they are universally beloved and it’s not like soccer officials consider it the ideal solution. It’s not sacred. They just haven’t figured out a better way.

And neither can I. Although a golden goal without goalies might be an interesting approach?

Clemson has won 2 of their last 3 games by PKs.

Let's not fix it until we lose one.

I say they have a player from each team kick each other in the shin and then

Each team get their two best skilled players and see who can juggle (keep the ball in the air with anything but their arms for non-soccer people) the longest.

It would be cool to have golden goal. Allow them to play another 60 minutes and if a team scores, the game is over. Unlimited subs, which I think they already allow at the collegiate level.

PK's are extremely stressful, and do not really show the true skill of the teams as a whole, but I still think it is the best way to get a winner. Especially since everyone is pretty gassed after 90 minutes + extra time.

Plus the PK tiebreaker really puts the stress on the keepers. Some keepers thrive on that "ish" (like Joseph Endema and my 10 yo son) while others will wilt under the pressure (see UNC's goalie yesterday though I feel bad for him considering he hadn't played all day).

I have always loved the idea of playing OT golden goal while removing 1 player from each side every 5 min. Keeps the defense on the pitch and adds strategy. If no goal after 30 min, you are down to are down to 4 on 4 with a keeper.

Move one goal to midfield and give each keeper 10 chances to score on the other you can't go beyond your own 18.

Past 60 minutes, introduce an additional ball every five minutes. Golden goal.

It's a ton of fun in air hockey with a second puck.

Interesting, but I think on the higher levels whichever team got

the ball first would have a massive advantage. I guess two outfield players would move to goal, but without the ability to use their hands, the first legit shot would get past them. Some of the pros could do that from anywhere inside 30 yards.

I’ve never met anyone in soccer that likes deciding a match with PK’s. My daughter’s season ended on Saturday decided by PK’s. 2-2 after regulation, 2-2 after extra time. Lost in PK’s. The team we lost to in PK’s on Saturday, lost on Sunday in PK’s.

I see about zero chance of it changing. It’s done to protect the players. Injuries skyrocket late in games. Players are tired, game is on the line, everyone is trying to make a play, exhaustion begins to blur decisions and BANG…..you get concussions and blown ACL’s.

End of an era for my daughter. Her teammate, a girl my daughter has played soccer with since she was 9 years old, completed her career. All American, 1st Team All Conference, no blown knees, no concussions. It feels like a miracle. I’m praying we get the same miracle.

Waiting to see if my daughter is All American this year. One last year to go.

Everyone hates PK’s, but if it saves one person from injury, I’ll take it. I’ve seen dozens of ACL’s with my daughter’s teammates over the years. I’ve seen girls come back from a 2nd ACL. I’ve never seen a girl come back from a 3rd ACL. I’ve never seen anyone come back and be the same.

Yeah, adjust the game so more goals can be scored, within reason. Something like baseball scores. As far a PK's, what a dumb name anyway. They aren't what they are called. The name should be called "golden kicks", or "dividers" or something creative that actually describes them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think penalty kicks are great.

If neither team has won after 110 minutes of soccer, PKs make sense.

Plus, they are really exciting!

I wouldn't want anything to be changed.

Currently 85% of penalties are made from the 12 yard spot. I like the idea of moving the spot back to where that percentage drops to 50% for overtime penalties. Additionally, the spot could be a line. The kicker could place it anywhere along that line to gain an angle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it's a little lower for penalty shootout kicks

Instead of a set PK @ 12 yds that favors the offense, have shooter start at 35yds with only 5 seconds to score on a breakaway. Keeper has option to charge off his line. Blocks can be retouched by shooter, as it is a timed event. Air horn goes off after 5 sec, video would show if it crossed the line or not.
