Graham Neff's Action Is Clear ... Long

I understand Neff hot making a move with Brownell just after his appointment to AD. Although he had been with the Athletic Department for years, he abided by the old "rule of thumb" that one needs to be in a position of authority for at least six months before making any major changes. To Neff's credit, however, he did make it pretty clear to Brownell that he believed that he (Brownell) had enough pieces to make the tournament this year ... and that would not be the NIT. The six-month time period has come and gone, and, at this point, it appears that Brownell and his team is in the process of delivering yet another unremarkable season.

I don't follow Clemson sports like I once did; however, I follow Tigernet including the posts, the spats, the name-calling, the initiation of newbies and even the politics. Tigernet is where I get the pulse of Clemson sports. It is clear that to me that CDS has become a victim of his success, as well as his stubbornness to stick with DJU for far too long. But in spite of delivering a W/L record that would be envied by, literally, 95% of his peers, he finally made a major change in an attempt to return to the CFP. Fans are now hopeful.

On the other end of the spectrum, Brownell has become a victim of his mediocrity. While players have come and gone during his thirteen years, someone like me ... someone who no longer follows college basketball ... perceives that not caring about or becoming accepting of Clemson basketball is more of an indictment of it than being upset by the team's same old, same old, year after year.

CDS's coaching change; the excitement surrounding the extraordinary play of Clemson's relatively new womens' softball team(s); the excitement surrounding the baseball coaching change; the early excitement of Clemson lacrosse; and another unremarkable season of Clemson basketball practically makes Neff's decision (about Brownell) inevitable. He would do well to copy CDS's very quiet and swift Streeter/Riley move ... just changing the names to Brownell and, say, Buckner, thereby creating immediate excitement for Clemson basketball. Maintaining the status quo would be an adaptation of CDS's "Best is the standard" to "Mediocrity is the standard," and Clemson is far too invested ($$$) to pull a "DJU" by hanging on to Brownell.

You are absolutely right. We can only hope that Neff sees what the majority of this Board see.
