Gotten ridiculous

Tennessee Vols quarterback Nico Iamaleava reportedly received an $8 million NIL deal in early 2022 before committing to UT. Two years later and the price for top quarterbacks has only increased. (Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was reportedly looking (https://atozsports.com/nashville/nil-georgia-qb-carson-beck-football-sec-tennessee-florida/) for a $4 million NIL deal to return to UGA in 2024. Beck is returning to Athens, but the amount of his NIL deal hasn't been confirmed.)
Something in the $2 million to $4 million range for Downs seems plausible. He's a difference maker on the defensive side
of the ball. And he's a player that any potential playoff team should want on their roster.

Can’t believe NCAA went in this direction with no checks and balances.

Don’t think it will ever change “much”. College football has changed … Don’t like it … just hope it does not game the game day experience … that’s what I try to focus on.

I think you misunderstand the situation. I'll be the first to say, the NCAA should be nowhere near P5 football. Elected state representatives passed laws across the country to open this door officially. The NCAA cannot legally challenge the states because they will get smoked like they did in the Alston case. College Presidents and Conference Commissioners only operate in their individual self interests and are a divided and ineffective voice on the issue. Bottom line, plenty of blame to go around.

They could enforce the rules of not allowing NIL discussions to take place until a player has joined a team but the reality is, they aren't enforcing anything related to this.

Seems like the NCAA or Colleges could get together and limit the NIL money to something like $1 Million per year. Then over that amount player would refund the scholarship to the school then apply some sort of luxury tax over the top to the state or NCAA to distribute to other schools.

Could make them turn pro (ineligible in NCAA) after 1 (or 2) years with Max (Capped) NIL money. Right now there are no rules, and at least in pro leagues, they have some rules. Schools NIL could be curtailed based on Graduation Rates.

Otherwise, the big schools will just have a minor league payroll and fire coaches with huge payouts.
My mistake, that is what is already happening today....
What is the graduation rate of the kids with giant NIL money, probably near ZERO.

Jimbo's living the life in Tahiti somewhere, sipping Martinis. He shouldn't be coaching anywhere now.
Enjoy retirement, and enjoy himself(he has to be close to 60). The way College Football is now, why
go through the grind and selfish players out of HS.

Don’t think that will happen. Sort of like FSU quitting … not many will make that choice. It’s now about the $$$ and the game day experience. Not much in between.

It will happen. Might not be a big number percentage wise but it will happen.

Money, holdouts for bigger contracts, etc. is why I don’t watch as much professional sports as I once did. Although it hasn’t effected my desire to watch Clemson sports I didn’t watch as many non Clemson games as past years. Got tired of hearing the list of schools each player had previously played with before transferring to their current school.

College player holdouts for bigger NIL deals is right around the corner if not already happening.

Clemson get all of the 3 star player they want in the portal but that won't help the program. As long as we are in the ACC, we'll never have the money to keep up with the Jones.

They days of getting a Trevor Lawrence or DW are over. For what it would take to secure one top QB the budget would be shout for other players

Yeah, but most of those ways would involve the schools sharing some of their own revenue with the players. They'd rather try to guilt the fans into donating to NIL collectives than pay the players directly out of their own pockets. It's not sustainable, though.

Wonder when all this has to be reported as income and they have to start paying 29% in taxes and they have spent it all? Does the collectives have tax attorneys for these nouveau riche to access to "protect them"?

I can see this coming to a head when they refuse to do any class work and just become employees of the school of the month. Then they get charged for access to the training table, clothing, shoes, equipment, pay for part of their "health Care".

a players union and collective bargaining. It’s already professional. Go 100% all in and make these men employees and let them collective bargain. It’s literally the only way to stop this and put some guard rails back up. Kids put on 3 year contracts.

If this is where the sport is going, I do believe a correction has to happen sooner rather than later. I just don't see enough people paying for this to make it work long term.

If it takes paying the players via NIL, or whatever mechanism that is deemed ok to field a competitive roster, how much money does that look like? I played with a scenario using the NFL model. 55 players/ 750k per player is the min. NFL salary in 2023. I figure colleges kids make less than that. So I just figured an average cost of $250k per player for 55 players. That is a payroll of $14 million. I figure that is in the ballpark considering 1~2 years ago, Ryan Day told reporters he needed like 8 or 10 million to keep his team together.

I just don't believe that year over year, alumni/ business owners are going to pump money into a collective. So it will trickle down to every fan. The only way I see that working is for this to eventually be a requirement for a season ticket purchase. For Clemson, you take that $14 million across 60,000 season tickets and that is on average $250 dollars a ticket more per year. So, a family of 4, that is an extra $1000. I think this prices people out. Sure, the lower deck crowd probably will stomach the cost. But the upper deck fan is going to re-evaluate. Game day experience or not, most fans will be relegated to coming to 1~2 bargain games a year. And if Clemson were to go on a downturn, well that could be bad. Downturn in season ticket sales means less money for the Roster. Less money for Roster means the team is likely worse, which makes the team even more likely to fail. How many fans are going to hang through a 3~4 year down period. So I just don't think this is going to work long term. I hope Clemson can keep from having to follow this path.

I am proud of our Alumni base. IPTAY has done a good job linking the alumni together to help fund our sports teams. But I think this is becoming a hamster wheel we cant keep up with long term.

Another interesting situation is that because there are different groups in this equation, Athletic Department Ticket Sales, University, Booster Club (IPTAY), Collectives, everyone will still want to keep their cut at current levels to stay relevant. No one is going to say, I will take less so the other group can theoretically take more to operate. So that will be fun watching that develop. Its definitely not going to be a streamlined process, which means even more money being needed...

Maybe joining a group of schools to form a league where there are some restrictions on money put into the program is where we should be focusing. NFL works because everyone plays by the same set of rules and the same amount of Money. Thus, everyone is competitive. Given the different schools sizes, ranges of income from alumni, etc. to keep the games competitive an interesting, more effort needs to be put into setting up a level playing field for the teams involved.

that much in college, no matter how good he is. It's not like the NFL where you could have a guy for 10 years, it will be 1-2 years or 3 years max.

The next Tennessee QB is going to want the same amount isn't he? How can you justify to boosters and NIL people to keep firing multi millions for a new QB every couple of years, especially if one of them is a letdown
