Gotta laugh at those that have unrealistic expectations for Clemson basketball

Jan 10, 2015, 3:40 PM

When have we ever been a consistent top ACC team?

When have we ever consistently beaten top 5 teams?

I know. That clearly means we never will, should never

Jan 10, 2015, 3:45 PM

expect it to happen, shouldn't even try, and should just be happy with being mediocre.

Nope. We should expect it to happen. But it's not gonna happen as quickly as some want it.

I agree with that, but once the commitment is made and

the right things are in place, it shouldn't take more than 2-3 years to be regulars in the NCAA tournament. If Brownell is indeed the right guy, we should get there even sooner once the new arena is built.

I agree.

I'm thinking two more years at the most.

I just don't think we can be a consistent winner very quickly considering our past, the money weve spent on basketball etc.

Couldn't agree more...

Never been one to knock on Brad, but Clemson basketball is either a dead end job or a resume stacker...There is no consistency with this program...That all pretty much left with Grant and Stitt, the year after the Clemson Administration ran OP off

We really need to see some consistent improvement

Jan 10, 2015, 5:05 PM [ in reply to I agree with that, but once the commitment is made and ]

Seems like every year under Brownell has been the same, just kind of par for the course. We lose to some teams we shouldn't(a lot can happen in BBall but we still shouldn't be losing to the Winthrop & Gardner Webb types), then we turn around and beat some teams like Arkansas and Pitt, then we'll probably get blown out by 25pts at Virginia. You would expect to see some improvement even if ever so slight each year. We don' have to win every ACC game but we should be to the point by now that we are not losing to mid-major schools like Winthrop if we are truly improving. Recruiting too has just been kind of so-so. We sign about the same talent level of recruits each year that are ok and can do some things but are kind of projects that have to really be coached up. It just seems like we would have gotten at least one recruit by now that was a real program changer.

I do not think Brownell is a bad coach but it just seems to me that he is not the type of coach that is going to be able to really change a programs path, at least in a decently timely manner. He does well with what he has but I just don't see things being much different in two years than they are right now. Just look at Dabo, in two years he was able to completely turn the football program around and continue that success without falling back to where we were when he took over. Not trying to be a dumper just realistic that it seems we are just staying stagnant when it comes to BBall.

Today was a great win for Brownell and the team and it shows that they can achieve some success. I hope that it is the boost they need to finish out the rest of the year strong and carry some confidence into seasons moving forward hopefully on their way to the NCAA tournament.

I can't say it enough, we need better players. It's not

Jan 10, 2015, 6:00 PM

Brownell's fault that he hasn't been able to recruit at a higher level, at least not entirely. I think Purnell hit the recruiting wall at Clemson, and that was a factor in his leaving. I think any coach would have struggled to recruit at a high level here given the lack of tradition and the aging facilities. I think Brownell is an excellent coach, and I don't think his "style of basketball" has anything to do with the lack of success. Still, this is Brownell's baby now, and he will be judged on his record, as he should be, fair or not.

I agree it is not entirely Brownell's fault, seems like the man has some bad luck. I think if we could get 1 or 2 guys that could shoot and have about 2 decent season back-to-back, something like make the NIT one year and the NCAA the next, accompanied with new facilities then more recruits would look at us seriously and the program would take a major turn for the better. Just like last year after a strong finish and a good NIT run it would have been the perfect time to have a little luck and be in the consideration for the tourney this year or at least look like another NIT team but it seems like we have taken another step back this season unless yesterdays win can catapult the team forward for the rest of the year. As for the "style" Brownell coaches I agree it doesn't make a difference to the success. Any style is going to win when you have a floor full of great players and any style is going to lose when you have a team that cannot score. Brownell's style actually keeps us in games longer just from a defense and slowing down the pace of play stand point, if we ran the floor all the time some of the games where we can't buy a basket would get even uglier than they already do. However, I still am not convinced that Brownell is going to be able to turn this program into what we would like it to be. There may not be anyone that can turn Clemson BBall into what the fans think we should be able to achieve. It's no knock on Brownell's coaching ability or as a person but for Clemson to be a yearly tournament contender it is going to take a unique coach and a little luck in landing some big time players that for some reason choose Clemson over other better ACC schools and after 5 years I personally have not seen enough improvement (there has been times of some) to convince me that in say 3 years we are making some pretty good runs in the NCAA. But Brownell is here to stay, at least for awhile so we will see if he is the man or not.

It's never unrealistic if you expect to achieve greatness. Otherwise why compete!?

The only thing worth laughing at is you not being happy with our win today. Go Tigers!!!!!

Hmm..where did you get that I'm not happy?

I'm pointing out the idiots that are down playing our win against Pitt.

I guess you didn't watch Clemson basketball during the Purnell era.

Little John was full and one of the toughest places to play in the ACC. We were a perennial 20+ win and tournament team.

So yea, we can have a solid basketball program.

Re: Gotta laugh at those that have unrealistic expectations for Clemson basketball

Jan 10, 2015, 4:08 PM

I didn't say we've never done it.

If you got that out the OP, read it again.

I said consistently. We've won 20+ games in only 13 seasons out of 60 years.

I Want to be a consistent 20+ game winner but realize it takes time.

Re: Gotta laugh at those that have unrealistic expectations for Clemson basketball

Jan 10, 2015, 4:22 PM

Brownell's not the guy.

Nothing against him but his style of play is not suited for a program that doesn't get many highly rated "basketball players".

Can we have good years every now and then with diamonds in the rough like KJ? Yes but we're not going to be consistent like we were under OP.

Re: Gotta laugh at those that have unrealistic expectations for Clemson basketball

Jan 10, 2015, 4:24 PM

Brownell may not be the guy but I honestly believe there are very few coaches that could make us consistent in a short time frame.

Re: Gotta laugh at those that have unrealistic expectations for Clemson basketball

And when I say consistent, I mean winning at least one game in the NCAA tournament just about every year, and maybe every few Years going deep into the tournament.

One and done isn't consistent imho.

The only thing that I expect is to be able to beat Big South teams every time. That's not too much to ask.
