Good analysis and perspective from David Hale at ESPN
Nov 8, 2021, 9:02 AM
|
|
"If Wake Forest can topple NC State next week, and Clemson beats Wake in Week 12, the ACC Atlantic, for the seventh straight year, will belong to the Tigers.
"...Let's take a moment to appreciate how far Clemson has come while the overriding narrative surrounding the team hasn't changed much at all.
"Clemson remains the only team to give Georgia a run for its money this season.
"The Tigers have endured myriad injuries, transfers and COVID-19 setbacks, and yet they're still here, with a shot to win the league again.
"Doesn't that say something about just how good this team really is?
"...had any handful of small things gone differently this year, the Tigers could be 1-8 or 9-0. The margins have been that slim.
"But we also saw Clemson's defense continue to fight, as it has all season, in spite of injuries and an offense that has offered little to no support. We saw freshman receiver Beaux Collins blossom in the slot -- six catches, 104 yards and a TD -- allowing Ross to move to the outside, where he's a far greater threat. We saw a run game that continues to evolve behind three young backs -- Will Shipley, Kobe Pace and Phil Mafah -- in spite of an offensive line desperately in need of an upgrade. We saw a five-star QB who might've given up on his season a dozen times by now let out a sigh of relief after the game, saying, 'I'm just so tired of losing.' Uiagalelei played with a sprained knee, and he turned in his best performance of the year.
"...the team has kept fighting, even when the light at the other end of the tunnel was little more than a flicker.
"There's still a chance 2021 ends with an ACC championship, but that's not the biggest takeaway. The real lesson of this season is that, with a few tweaks and a small influx of new talent, the 2022 Tigers already look like they'll be title contenders once again."

Wake is undefeated in conference, the game against the holes didn’t count toward conference record. Wake will have to lose at least once before we play them for the final conference game to have any bearing on who wins the division.

That's my take as well. They both need 2 losses for us to TIE for the top spot in the Atlantic. Wake might lose 2, they haven't beaten anyone worth a darn. NC State is not likely to.

Yeah the most plausible path to the division title is for Wake to beat NC state and then lose to us and BC in their final games. We also really need NC state to lose another game and have 3 losses. If all 3 teams finish with 2 losses then the ACC’s predictably over complicated and ill-conceived tie breaker system comes into play; at that point who knows. The tie breaker should be super simple; the highest ranked team in the playoff poll should be in the championship game. It’s all about making the playoff so you put up your teams that have the best shot.

I think he’s wrong. Wake still needs to lose another ACC game. The UNC loss does not affect the conference. A two loss NC ST still has the tiebreaker. I like his optimism and thoughts but we need more help. Not mathematically eliminated yet but need some stars to align

The Wake loss to UNC didn't affect the conference standings, so Wake needs to lose to us and BC the following week and NC State would have to lose to Syracuse or UNC after losing to Wake.

NC State still has to play Syracuse. So they have 3 games to lose two and WF needs to lose to us and BC and that is the only definitely path. If it goes to the tie breaker then it does get complicated. but WF would definitely be our because there losses would both be inner division. If NC state loses just one more then I think they are in because I think they would go back to head to head since wake would have 2 loses inner conference and eliminated.

I keep hearing people say "well, the louisville qb missed

time due to injury." but they fail to mention that our qb went out injured too. Taisun P had to come in for DJ and DJ had been playing better and was moving the ball and it looked like Clemson had momentum and might be able to score another td but he went out and we stalled and settled for the fg.

As the other posters have pointed out, he is wrong. I believe we need some other things to work out for us - namely wake losing one other game. Then, I am not sure how we win the three way tie? Confusion all caused by a non-conference UNC-Wake game. If you look, WF has 9 conference foes...UNC was one added to fill a non-conference slot in their schedule. What I do know is that we need to beat Wake, and we need a three way tie at the top to beat NCST in a tie with their head to head over us.

That the ACC would have a game between two conference members not count in the league standings is an embarrassment. Some things never change.

THE only way Clemson wins the division is if Clemson has 2 conference losses, Wake has 2 conference losses and NC State has 3.
If all three teams finish with 2 losses, NC State will win the division. In this scenario, it means that Wake will have 2 losses within division while NC State and Clemson will have 1 loss within division. Wake is eliminated from the 3-way tiebreaker and then the tie breaker moves to head to head which NC State owns over Clemson.

Does Hale even spend 1 minute a week attempting to keep up with the ACC? He’s factually wrong on several things in his write up. How embarrassing for ESPN.

So I think we’ve established that Hale was incorrect, so consider NC State. I’m pretty sure they’ll beat Wake and then lose their last two games to Syracuse and UNC. What would be more on brand for the Wolfpack than to have everything lined up for ‘em and then crap the bed when it matters most?
