154 - DB/QB Dexter McCleon Rushed for 154 Yards

Reply

DB Dexter McCleon did not only play defense for Clemson. As a freshman in 1993, he was quickly making a name for himself with three interceptions by midseason – before switching sides to play QB. And … he returned punts and even a few kickoffs on special teams as well.

And… he was a Clemson outfielder for two seasons as well.

Now that is a true athlete!
(Is it just me, or do you get the impression, he also could create his own shot while breaking down a 2-3 zone with ease if he chose to do so?)

Before Clemson:

The Minnesota Twins selected Dexter McCleon in the 13th Round of the 1993 MLB Draft. Fortunately, he chose to attend Clemson instead of going straight into a professional baseball career out of high school. Smart Man!

While at Clemson:

Warning: When you look at Dexter McCleon’s stats, your first reaction will be to say, “No one player did all this! C’mon, CBProf, stop lying to us!” But according to Sports-Reference.com (for Football) and TheBaseballCube (for Baseball), McCleon did put up the following stats at Clemson:

Spring 1993 (Baseball):
- .299 Batting Average
- 16 RBI
- 25 Runs Scored

Fall 1993:
- 9 Completions for 191 Yards (10.1 Average)
- 1 Passing Touchdown
- 21 Carries for 154 Yards (7.3 Average)
- 1 Rushing Touchdown
- 3 Interceptions with 14 Return Yards (4.7 Average)
- 14 Punt Returns for 168 Yards (12.0 Average)

Spring 1994 (Baseball):
- .234 Batting Average
- 22 RBI
- 29 Runs Scored

Fall 1994:
- 4 Interceptions with 27 Return Yards (6.8 Average)
- 13 Punt Returns for 71 Yards (5.5 Average)

Fall 1995:
- 2 Interceptions with 16 Return Yards (8.0 Average)
- 2 Punt Returns for 6 Yards (3.0 Average)

Fall 1996:
- 12 Punt Returns for 83 Yards (6.9 Average)
- 4 Kick Returns for 98 Yards (24.5 Average)

Clemson Career (1993-1996):

Football:
- 9 Completions for 191 Yards (10.1 Average)
- 1 Passing Touchdown
- 21 Carries for 154 Yards (7.3 Average)
- 1 Rushing Touchdown
- 9 Interceptions with 57 Return Yards (6.3 Average)
- 41 Punt Returns for 328 Yards (8.0 Average)
- 4 Kick Returns for 98 Yards (24.5 Average)

Baseball:
- .259 Batting Average
- 38 RBI
- 54 Runs Scored

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/dexter-mccleon-1.html
https://www.thebaseballcube.com/content/player/87851/

Despite playing well as a DB, McCleon was moved to QB to take advantage of his skill set for the offense Coach Ken Hatfield desired. It worked. According to Sports Illustrated:

“The Cavaliers came to Clemson ranked 18th in a season in which the Tigers had seen a revolving door at quarterback. Somehow they had still managed to go 6-3 up to that point. In this one Hatfield played cornerback Dexter McCleon at quarterback wanting to run the wishbone. It worked, as the Tigers came away with a 23-14 win.”

https://www.si.com/college/clemson/football/clemson-the-nineties-biggest-games-ken-hatfield-tommy-west

McCleon moved back to DB after the 1993 season.

After Clemson:

The St Louis Rams selected McCleon with Pick 40 (Second Round) of the 1997 NFL Draft. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“After a Clemson career that saw him play quarterback, cornerback, free safety, return man, and outfielder for the baseball team, McCleon was drafted in the second round by the Saint Louis Rams in 1997. He played in every game his rookie year and his contributions gradually increased. He started to peak along with the Rams, who won the Super Bowl in 1999 and made an appearance in 2001. McCleon started 15 games in 1999, led the NFC in interceptions (8) in 2000, and totaled a career-high 78 tackles in 2001.”

https://clemsontigers.com/former-tiger-dexter-mccleon-making-waves-for-undefeated-chiefs/

According to that same ClemsonTigers.com article, McCleon signed with the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2002 season. St. Louis wanted to move him to safety, but he felt he should stay at CB. KC gave him that opportunity and his career continued to flourish. In all, McCleon played 10 seasons in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Texans. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com he registered to following NFL stats:

- 31 Interceptions for 179 Return Yards
- 7 Fumble Recoveries for 60 Return Yards
- 1 Fumble Return Touchdown
- 375 Tackles (336 Solo and 39 Assisted)

Truly an amazing player!

And the Dexter McCleon legacy continues on. Dexter (DJ) McCleon Jr. is a highly sought 2028 recruit. According to Tigernet from May 2023 (And, thank you for your great work, David Hood):

“A blast from the past was the first person I ran into on the sidelines – former Clemson and NFL standout Dexter McCleon. If you remember, McCleon was both a standout baseball and football player in his home state of Mississippi and was drafted in the 13th round by the Minnesota Twins in 1993, but instead elected to come to Clemson to play corner.

Why was McCleon there? Let me introduce you – if you haven’t already heard – to Dexter McCleon Jr., or DJ. DJ is a 2028 prospect who already has college baseball scouts drooling over his talent. He’s also a standout wide receiver and worked out with the older kids this morning – he is already pushing 6-3 and has freakish athleticism.

At a recent baseball event, DJ hit 89 MPH on the radar gun and can play multiple spots.”

154 - Harvey White Set Passing Efficiency Record at 154 in 1957

QB Harvey White led Clemson to tremendous success in the late 1950s. ClemsonTigers.com describes White’s success as follows:

“White was Clemson’s starting quarterback under Frank Howard from 1957-59. He led the Tigers to a 24-8 record during those seasons, including bowl appearances in 1958 (Sugar Bowl) and 1959 (Bluebonnet Bowl). Clemson won the ACC Championship in 1958 and 1959 and posted an 11-2 conference record in those seasons combined.

Clemson ranked in the final top 20 of at least one of the polls each year. The 1957 team was 19th in the final UPI poll, 12th by AP and 13th by UPI in 1958, and 11th by AP in 1959.

White was named first-team All-ACC in 1957 when he threw for 841 yards and 11 touchdowns against three interceptions. He was the first Clemson quarterback to be named first-team All-ACC, and the only sophomore Clemson quarterback to be named first-team All-ACC until Tajh Boyd in 2011.

White’s passing efficiency mark of 154.6 in 1957 was a season record for a Clemson quarterback given a minimum of 90 attempts until Tajh Boyd broke the mark in 2012.

https://clemsontigers.com/harvey-white-passes-away/

Very impressive stuff!!

According to Sports-Reference.com, White recorded the following stats with Clemson:

1957:
- 46 Completed Passes for 841 Yards
- 11 Passing Touchdowns
- 69 Carries for 197 Yards (2.9 Average)
- 1 Rushing Touchdown

1958:
- 42 Completed Passes for 481 Yards
- 1 Passing Touchdown
- 75 Carries for 258 Yards (3.4 Average)
- 5 Rushing Touchdowns

1959:
- 52 Completed Passes for 693 Yards
- 5 Passing Touchdowns
- 38 Carries for 26 Yards (0.7 Average)
- 1 Rushing Touchdown

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/harvey-white-1.html

There are several great stories about White’s heroics at Clemson. For example, in October 1958, White set a then-record for the latest moment in a game when Clemson scored the winning touchdown. That score led Clemson to a 12-7 win over Vanderbilt. I believe, however, a certain game-winning touchdown in January 2017 in Tampa has since broken that record. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“We scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the last one on a short run by Harvey White with just three seconds left. It is still the latest Clemson has ever scored a touchdown to win a game. This was a key victory in a bowl season for Clemson.”

After Clemson:

The Boston Patriots drafted Hervey White in 1960. He played one season with the Patriots in 1960.

Being a true Clemson man, Harvey White continued to give back to others in the community as he got older. As reported in IndexJournal.com:

“One of my memories of him is he was an outstanding athlete, but he was always humble about that,” oldest daughter Debra White said.

She said he wanted to be remembered as more than just a great athlete.

“He was always very involved with athletics throughout his life,” daughter Patti Connelly said. “In his later years, he was involved with sports activities and was a coach with the Special Olympics. He volunteered his time for use in the community.”

South Carolina Highway 154 is a 16.68 mile state highway that runs from the south end at US 76 in Mayesville to the north end at US 15 in Bishopville , crossing US 401 in St. Charles on the way in Sumter and Lee counties. Mayesville was the hometown of Archie Reese.

Clemson basketball's Elite Eight opponent, Alabama, is a public research university in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was established in 1820, the year after Alabama was admitted to the union as a state in 1819. The first students were admitted in the spring of 1831, so it took a decade to design and build the school just outside of then state capital Tuscaloosa (Montgomery became the capital in 1846). The university now has 38,000 students on a 1,920 acre campus in 13 academic schools including the only public law school in the state. The athletic teams, the Crimson Tide, compete in NCAA Division I in the Southeastern Conference. Notable alumni include Paul Bear Bryant, Jim Nabors, Bobby Bowden, and Clemson coaches Frank Howard, Hootie Ingram, Charley Pell, Danny Ford, and Dabo Swinney.
