I had 2 friends involved in a somewhat similar incident

(Not at Clemson) 2 football players were drunk and were looking for trouble, so they started some. Sucker punched one of my friends to the point he nearly bit off his own lip. The other friend came in to try and help, getting hit in the process.
No charges were filed on those guys, either, but there were several witnesses. The school's re-action? All parties had to go to anger management (Even the guy with the split lip). Nothing else. The school will screw over non-athletes if they can

I've only watch Law and Order and even I could have gotten him an innocent verdict and monetary damages from the "victim."
I would have shown the jury his game tape and said "see, he's never hit anybody."
