Gardner-Webb Facts

Mar 1, 2015, 1:15 PM

So, I attempted to walk onto the Clemson baseball team in 1996 and due to the likes of Benson and Koch, that didn't happen. So I transferred to Gardner-Webb to continue my baseball career. A move that helped me tremendously grow as a person but hurt because I was a Clemson kid. Yes, Clemson should win this game every year, so this is just for fun. Anyway, I thought I would throw some quick facts with you about G-Dubb:

- the 3rd Perry brother played football at GW

- GW basketball beat Kentucky at Rupp Arena a few years back that sent the downward spiral for Bill Self. They were also 4 seconds from victory at the Dean Dome vs UNC until a late 3 sunk them.

- NBA great Artis Gilmore played his first 2 years at GW before leading Jacksonville to the Final 4! NBA guys John Drew and Eddie Lee Wilkins are GW guys.

- Charlie Harbison played and coached at GW!

- Former Football coach Steve Patton was a standout at Furman

- GW Women's BB made the tourney a few years ago.

- UFC fighter and Olympic Wrestler Sara MCNann attended school at GW (graduate school)

GW was in my backyard growing up. Lot of guys from my county played baseball there. I almost played there the same timeframe you mentioned. It was between GW and Mars Hill. By the time my freshman yr rolled around, I hung up my cleats and went to App St.

But I've always been and will be a Tiger.

The names Rhodes, Pruett, Harrill, Teague, or Hill ring bells?

Know them all. I went to same HS with Brad. The Hill brothers went to a rival HS. And Sammy and I played AL ball together. You may know D Bailey that played football there at that same time. He and I were good buds. We played BB and FB together in HS and were big Clemson fans. Saw the '92 FSU game with him in The Valley.

Last fact.

They almost beat GT in football in 2008 losing 10-7 in Atlanta. That next week GT beat Clemson 21-17 in DV.

Place is really growing. New baseball stadium, and a new softball facility currently under construction. I live two miles from the campus and take in plenty of baseball games throughout the spring and summer. Are you a Chase grad? I graduated from RS in 97.

No. I am from Charleston, SC who found G-Dubb by chance while sitting in my dorm room in Mauldin during Clemson tryouts.

Nice facts, except that Bill Self coaches at Kansas and hasn't coached at Kentucky.

You were thinking of Billy Gillespie.
