does not take anyone with a photographic memory to see that this is the first time the pubs on this board have been sleptical of the new UE numbers.
after all, you have been beating your chests on the slow job growth as if this were a good thing for America.

I have heard complaints for years that these numbers aren't accurate. This is not the first time that I have seen it suggested.

when they were over 8% it was beneficial to the pubs on this board that like to point the finger at Obama for our unemployment numbers. Just when it dipped below the 8% he promised, then wing nuts all pounce on the conspiracy theory.

He promised it would never go above 8% if he spent 1 trillion in stimulus. It was above 8% for 43+ months.

Small, but important difference. And if you the stimulus was to impact the economy slowly, then the newest job numbers do seem to make some sense. But the BLS could be inaccurate, but we all should hope it's not and that the number keeps getting smaller.

I'm sure I just missed all the talk about how the BLS reports were wrong instead of just constant talk about how Obama lied about pulling unemployment under 8% by citing the BLS. I apologize.

I haven't seen you jump on this newest overreaction about the 7.8% report, which is what the main topic is anyhow. So there's that.
My main point still remains. Most pubs (and libs) will believe whichever poll and economist says what they want to hear. That's no different than with their news nor is it some unknown truth.

There's a reason you've been hearing these terms "real unemployment rate" and "underemployed" becoming more frequent the past few years.

I've had a problem with the unemployment rate numbers
Oct 10, 2012, 10:31 AM
[ in reply to Do like most on here and go with whichever agrees with you. ] |

for years, perhaps decades. It's not anything approaching an accurate measure of anything. It's just the number of unemployed people looking for work and receiving benefits. It does not count tens of millions of people unemployed and NOT looking for work. And the more entitlements we offer, the higher the number of people who can choose not to look for work. All those millions who have recently applied for Social Security disability since the recession.....they are not figured into the unemployment rate. Toss in increased food stamp use and subsidized housing, and lowering the work requirements for welfare, and those people are also excluded from the number.
If every unemployed American stopped looking for work tomorrow, our "unemployment" rate would be zero.
What Gallup is suggesting is, in fact, a much better measure because it is the inverse of the labor force participation rate. It counts those people NOT looking for work as well. And if you look at the numbers, since July, 1.4 million people have simply left the labor force. They are not figured into the official unemployment numbers the politicians promote.
