Francis Marion tried to tell you.

Some of you may have seen some threads where Francis Marion® has discussed the significance of the score at halftime relative to the final outcome. The score at half on Saturday was 24-14. Normally one would expect this to lead to a score of 48-28. At the end of the 3rd quarter the score was 34-14. Knowing that 34 is greater than 28 there was little reason to worry about scoring any more on offense.

Or "just a little" unwanted pregnancy. That's my all time favorite understatement of a problem. "Oops, I think I'm a little bit pregnant." Don't worry, that "little bit" part will soon blossom.

Tell that to those who control the polls

With the built-in edge given to SEC teams, you can almost be sure that two, and possibly three (a close UGA victory over UT, and a close Bama win over Georgia in the SEC title game), SEC teams will be in the playoff. That leaves two, or maybe even one, slot for Ohio State/Michigan and Clemson. Wins may be wins, but unimpressive wins are not going to get the team where they want to go.

most TNetters have been alive.
We used to say the AP pollsters are your Saturday night drunks who stagger on Sunday mornings looking at game results. The teams scoring the most points open their bloodshot eyes the most...and they vote accordingly.
Now, some will say any poll that's not the CFP one doesn't matter. Horsehockey! No one can convince me that the CFP Committee members AREN'T influenced by the AP and Coaches' Polls despite what they say. They may vary them slightly, only slightly, but they largely follow those other two polls.
Thus, yes, I do believe style points count...more than most people believe. Hence, why I knew dammmmm well they would jump Michigan over us this past week. Had we put up seven or 14 more points and held their first half total, Michigan would not...repeat not have jumped to Number 4. You know why I know that? Because even over 50 years ago in "The Tiger" Newspaper offices, our sports staff would compare and contrast point totals...i,e. style points...in predicting the next round of scores of various teams. They did it because they knew the AP pollsters did it...a practice that continues to this day DESPITE what they say.

Michigan jumped us because they beat a supposed top 10

team. Penn St isn't close to a top 10 team, but that's where they were ranked, by the polls you put so much stock in.

if we had beaten FSU 45-14 and had been able to play backups in the fourth quarter? I don’t; that’s why playing four quarters matters. I surely hope that the CFP committee won’t screw us over if we do manage to go undefeated… but if we do you can point to inconsistency against average competition (average in the context of top 4 CFP competition). In this case it’s the defense that is hurting us. We look inconsistent and vulnerable.
Leave no doubt. Finish. If you are a champion it will show.
