Friday May 12th which goes up to, across & down highest mountain east of the Rockies..Mt Mitchell (48,000 ft elevation).

Will, now 53, has been running for over 25 years in 2K, 5K, 10K, etc all over the South including the Iron Man (achieving a super good-looking metal belt buckle award) and many other running events and has finished 1st or very high in his age group..

even running in 2020 & 2021 at the famed Grand Canyon "Rim to Rim to Rim" Venue (going into the Colorado River twice) which is about 46 miles of grueling trails & rocky paths taking about 14-16 hours..

but this 100 mile trek up Mt Mitchell has had him practicing for months on week-ends with a heavy back pack of supplies and double water bottles with sip straws extending up towards his mouth..

with repeated car trips from the Charlotte area to Mt Mitchell, Black Mtn & Crowder Mtn to get his body adjusted to the extreme grind, temps & high altitude.

Wishing him well and personal success!

Go TiGER WILL!

Many, many years ago I did a marathon and a half-ironman triathlon.

Those are as tough as I ever wanted to do.

The only thing close to "100" in an athletic event was I became a "100 hole hiker" by walking 100 holes of golf when I was 59.

1000 miles and 48,000 feet of elevation change is awesome. How many times does he summit Mt. Mitchell (only about 5000 feet above sea level)?

Keep us posted on how he did.

Has he ever considered the Barkley Marathon in Tennessee?

BTW, I know someone who has does the rim to rim to rim. Way too tough for me. In my hey day, I might have tried the rim to rim, but no way would I have attempted the return trip.

I'm mildly familiar with that section of the mountians. I'm now a day hiker. Taht course would be some extremely demanding day hikes. I'm even more impressed with anyone who wants to run it.

It is very taxing just to hike it even without a heavy pack on. For those that hike you know that the characteristics of a trail are crucial in how difficult it is. Of course there is the gradient, but just as important is how evenly packed and soft the trail is. The roots and rocks created by the massive erosion that has occured on the Mitchell trail make it a doosy. No soft steps. Your foot never land flat. And there is several points that just to take a step you are going up the equivalent of these to four steps in one pace. It's a beach.
