for cast-iron-net, what say ye Lunge experts?

Jun 3, 2015, 7:00 AM

I know some of you have cast iron things and may know more than I do.
well... not "may" but surely know more than I do.

I have a chance to buy them.

does anyone have any idea of their value? serious and non serious replies ONLY please....

it is a 9 piece Cast-Iron set.
5 skillets. One marked Wagner 8.5 inch. One piece has feet.
3 muffin tins. One marked Lodge 5P2.
There's a unique cactus piece marked Lodge 5CP2, and a trivet.
some light rust

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a used set. Pretty sure you could buy all of that new for $100-150.

I have heard that Lodge has decreased the thickness/quality of their cast iron to be more cost competitive, but I have no idea how true that is.

those "commemorative" ones with the logos on the bottom

Have bad hot spots where the metal is thinner
If you really want to cook with them I'd hold out for flat bottom ones.
That said, if you want the cactus pan, buy the lot and resell what you don't want.

Yeah $50 is probably a good price

I would only buy cast iron that you will cook in or is

collectible or unique. That assortment would just sit in my basement and get rustier. Smaller skillets are too small to cook in.

I love the smaller ones for 1 or 2 eggs or a slice of

bologna or a single of sauted mushrooms to go with a steak.

They make good spoon/spatula holders too.

I've never had corncob-shaped cornbread

Jun 3, 2015, 8:20 AM

nor cactus-shaped.

I feel so incomplete.

Siriusly, if you have low iron blood, using such cookware

Jun 3, 2015, 8:26 AM

will pretty much take care of it. However, most men over 35 start having too high levels so you might want to steer clear. However, if the woman(s) in your life have iron issues, you can be a hero.

hth.

The cactus thing is neat, but I'd never

get it back in working order.

I prefer the older (early to mid 1900's) over the newer ones

Jun 3, 2015, 10:41 AM

due to the slicker finish. You should be able to check what they're going for on ebay since the numbers are still legible.

Since they need to be reconditioned, I agree that $40-$50 should do it. If they were conditioned and ready to cook, they'd be worth 15-20/per probably (if there isn't a rare one in the mix).

Good find
