For any and all Teachers on T-Net

Jan 20, 2016, 10:40 AM

Any of yall have any experience with Google Classroom and using it in your class?

I am starting with it this semester and looking for any tips, tricks, problems you have or somebody you know/work with have.

TIA

So they do math are these stupid ways that I've

Jan 20, 2016, 11:07 AM

Never seen. I ask my kid what the teacher said to do and he replies nothing. We watch videos.

Well ask your teacher for help tomorrow. Can't , she'll tell is to watch the videos.

I've been able to watch the videos and explain it to son all but 1 time. They were dividing fractions using some sort of block matrix sorting and shading. I was onboard until they started dividing mixed fractions. I couldn't figure that out for the life of me. WOrse than laplace transformations. Then I was like , fork this crap.

I showed him the proper way to divide fractions. He said the teacher would mark it wrong. I Told him as long as he got the answer right with my method I wouldn't care what the teacher said.

That sounds like more of a Common Core issue than a google classroom issue.

I have been using Google Classroom every day for the past two years for assignments, announcements, and distributing material to students. It allows you to post assignments with attachments from your drive so that students can work on their iPads, Chromebooks, etc. It eliminates the paper mess, for the most part, on my desk and allows me to keep up with students' work more efficiently. It creates a separate folder for each class in your drive, along with separate folders for each assignment that you give. I am a huge fan. I've also switched over to giving quizzes as Google Forms; there is an add-on called Flubaroo for Sheets that will allow you to create a key for your quiz and have it graded and emailed to students immediately with descriptions of questions that were missed if you choose to do so. Classroom doesn't come without its pitfalls, however; students occasionally have issues opening files that you send them and sometimes prefer the "old-fashioned" paper/pencil method as opposed to opening files and working in an app such as Notability, but I think the pro's far outweigh the cons. I'm all about making my job a little easier, and classroom helps me do that to a certain extent. If you have any more questions, feel free to send me a direct message (or whatever it's called on here) with your email...my planning period has come to an end. Good luck.

Look under add on.

Also look into gradecam and mastery connect.
Those are not free but make life a lot easier to grade MC questions.

Is there anything to grade essays? Most of my tests have an essay question on them.

How do I submit an answer key for that add on?

I'm not sure about the essay. Anything math and I'm who you need to ask.
To grade assignments.
First submit a response yourself
Go to advanced options under flubaroo
Autograde
Select point value for each question.
Then you can select what response to use for a key. This is the one you submitted.

Depends on what your students have. If everyone has chromebooks the Google classroom is really good. If students have iPads, showbie is what you need.

Google Classroom is how you send and receive documents to your students. They join your class by you giving them your class code. You then post assignments and attach your document that your students will use. You students need to make a copy of the document and then complete and submit it through Google classroom.

Google classroom is a great way for your students to always have access to notes and assignments in one location. No student can have the " I never got one " excuse.

Biggest tip is your students need to make a copy of the document. If they change things in the master copy then It changes for everyone. (That also depends on who you allow to edit).

Another tip is take it easy. Don't try to do too much too soon. Try little things at a time until you get the hang of it.

Yeah I told my class they are my guinea pigs this year. I have a google calendar that they are added to, but if I can get google classroom to work correctly then that will be used as a back up.

We are suppose to be getting the HP Revolve 810 for students. The teachers already have them. We are getting classroom sets this semester as a soft roll out then next year all students will have their own.

Great. Hope all goes well.

Use google's version of word, excel, etc.
Google docs and etc work better with classroom as far as your students being able to make copies and store items.
Also because it's Google, that creates a URL. Those are easier to copy and paste then attaching documents form word. URL's also can be created into qr codes.

good luck, and just keep practicing at it.

what works best if all your students have macbooks?

Jan 20, 2016, 11:36 AM [ in reply to Re: For any and all Teachers on T-Net ]

our kids have macbooks....

how does google classroom work with that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

Couple things

Jan 20, 2016, 11:49 AM

1. All your students sound like hipsters. I have the skrong dislike for hipsters.
2. The thought of you teaching and molding young minds terrifies me and is one of the reason my son will never grace the inside of a public k-12 school.

Anything with a keyboard= Google classroom
Any touchscreen tablet= showbie and or notability.
Anything with both = your choice.

Classroom can be accessed by an app or online.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it is a complete and utter pain in the ###

Jan 20, 2016, 12:39 PM

We use it out here in San Jose along with Google Drive exclusively for all shared docs, etc.. Part of the problem is I am old and stubborn, the other part is the parents are not all on board with it so they drive me nuts with email questions. I end up attaching docs on emails for them to see. It is tech for the sake of tech as far as I am concerned.

Hence why I always put it in the amphi. Don't want to crowd the football board with something unnecessary.... like basketball ;)

This thread is scary. I'm glad my children have both moved on and into Clemson. I hope most teachers don't have the children watch online videos and take automatically graded tests on the computer. If so then why do we even need the teacher?

don't get what's wrong with online videos but....

My hero is the guy who got a job as a telemarketer. Outsourced his job overseas for 1/4 of the price. Sat around doing nothing all day while still getting paid 3/4 of his normal salary.

Yeah he was eventually caught and fired :)
