For 50 years I never knew I'd been pulling for a PhILLY Boy!

Dec 4, 2015, 12:42 PM

Saying..I visited the Clemson campus in 1957 for the first time..went to school there couple times from 1959-1966 (married 2nd time)..and it wasn't until 2008 on a visit to game with friends that I heard one of them say, after looking at the plaque under Tom G Clemson's statue, that he was from Philadelphia.

I just about fainted since I never realized that..and for 50 years this real Southern Boy had been pulling for a Yankee!

LOL..and GoTiGERS Everywhere!

Thomas G came south before the Civil War to ply his trade of surveying. There are some stories that say John C. Calhoun hired him to come south and survey his plantation. Either way Thomas G ended up as husband to Calhoun's daughter and eventually the owner of the Calhoun estate. Since he arrived before the late unpleasantness between the North and the South I'd say he doesn't qualify as a "Yankee", but more of a convert!
