issue should be handled (leave it up the voters in each state). This will doom Trump in Florida - the abortion issue will bring out a lot of single issue voters - and they will vote Dem while they are there...
They will be voting to basically extend it to 24-weeks.

I can only speak for my Jewish relatives in South Fla and out west, they don't see Biden as pro Hamas, nor do most people in this country. The Cuban Jewish people, Jewbans, always vote Repub anyway. Anyway, something like 60% of Jews are Dem in Florida. A little over 30% are Repub. The rest independent.

That's not that point. There are federal laws that protect people's civil rights. You said everything should be left up to the states. There are reasons for federal laws. Just a random example.

Not doubting you - I just haven't seen any Federal Congressman calling for it and would like to know who is committing that political suicide. I personally think the whole abortion issue should remain at the State level as most of our Governing should be.
Too much of our Governance has been nationalized and is part of the reason the country is at one another's throats.
For starters - the average citizen has relatively no voice with their Federal representatives. It's just a fact that most of our Federal Congressmen spend a majority of their time supporting a National political party agenda that requires them to spend a substantial amount of time fundraising. The Federal reps are simply not accessible to the average Joe and are focused on where the big donor money folks are coming from. They live nowhere near us and spend the majority of their time hundreds to thousands of miles away from their home States.
Conversely, my State reps live in the same county as me 365 days a year. I routinely see them around town and speak to them on occasion. I've sent them emails on an issue and have received personal phone calls from the actual Representative themselves to discuss it. In short - our State reps are far more responsive and attuned to what is happening in our lives because they live amongst us and deal with many of the same issues themselves.
Also nationalizing most issues ignores the fact that what works for the people in California does not necessarily work for the people living in South Carolina. When we nationalize so many issues at the Federal level it forces whole swaths of the country to ultimately abide by rules they absolutely abhor. Forcing people in South Carolina to accept a California "value" is just as wrong as forcing California to accept a South Carolina "value". This is particularly true with the "culture war" issues where almost every issue is being treated as a National moral crusade with the each of the opposing sides seeking to force the whole country to live under their value system.
Back to abortion... Any Republican who puts forth a complete ban on abortion is committing political suicide. Just look at what happened in a State seat race in "red" Alabama last week where the IVF issue totally flipped a former Republican district. I'm pro-life but realize that ain't where the majority of the country, or my State resides on the issue. To ignore this political reality will result in continued Republican losses of otherwise winnable races.
So... keeping some level of abortion "legal" (my personal preference is 16-18 weeks after that must have cause) is a reality the Republicans better come to accept and stop letting the more draconian anti-abortion voices dictate the issue for them.

He introduced the bill in 2022. Trump has privately voiced support for it, but I don't believe him since you know he's got a string of abortions on his resume. There are plenty others. The whole "it should be states' decision" by the Pubs was a lie.

I agree with you but they don't seem to get it. One could argue this single-handedly cost the Pubs dearly in 2022.

you know, the old Jim Crow era law that made it impossible to vote if you ever committed a felony. It passed by an overwhelming margin, only to have Desantis turn it into a giant slow-moving bureaucracy that makes it nearly impossible to have your voting rights restored.
So when ballot measures come up in Florida, and you talk about the will of the people, I am going to remind you of power-obsessed authoritarians like Desantis who defy said will.

But prisons don't "reform", most people don't come out better people. Some absolutely do, and some actually make something of themselves.
But they should certainly have the right to vote after they've paid their debt.

True. Most develop substance abuse probs or worse substance abuse probs. The future isn't too bright for them generally, unless they have some amazing skill. They have trouble getting licensing for so many things. Then of course background checks. They should be able to vote of course, but that is the least of their worries. Anyway, yeah they should be able to vote once off probation or parole.

Florida overturned the 100-year-old law a few years ago, but unfortunately, as mentioned, the governor blocked it in any way possible, mostly by setting up long lines one has to wade through, with tacked on legal expenses. One could consider these things a poll tax, but with the Florida state house full of Pan Handle crazies, so nothing will be done about it.
Again, the will of the people does nto mean jack squat down here. And when the voters overwhelmingly support 15-week abortions on the ballot initiative, Desantis will find some other way to block it.

The rights coalitions think "paid your debt" means serve your sentence
The right (and most of the public as well) believes that you should also have to pay restitution and what ever other monies are owed by a court to have "paid your debt"
Florida has not, and refuses to set up a system to track any of this. They simply allow ex-felons to register anyway, then try and arrest them if they vote
This is not what we intended when we voted for a restoration of rights

I think if they serve their sentence and then stay out of trouble for a specific amount of time, say two years or five years or whatever, then they should regain the right to vote. I don't think they should be able to walk out of prison and vote the next week but I also don't think they should forfeit the right to representation for life either.
