Would it really be the best option to throw these kids in jail and take away football from them?
If we did that that likely outcome would be that they would indeed just become criminals the rest of their lives.
At least with football they have a legitimate chance to be productive members of society.

They are already likely criminals... But without punishment what's next? They need to learn lessons just like those who aren't lucky enough to attend college for free BC they play a sport well....

I'm not even saying they deserved jail time

but some kind of punishment for sure. Probation, community service, court-mandated drug and firearm education programs, etc. Surely some sort of punishment is better than letting them get off with impunity and proving that big-time athletes really do get special treatment.

They're already doing the things you said.
"According to documents both players have to go through weekly urine tests, have regular drug counseling, monthly video appointments with a mental health consultant and have had to meet with a Tuscaloosa police officer for gun safety/ownership education.
Both had to complete 20 hours of community service.
Robinson also has spent 26 hours riding along with the Northport police department and jones had to spent 21 days in a drug rehab program."

I'm not sure how they can be required to do any of that if no charges were brought. I heard absolutely nothing about a deal being made.

I think it still warrants suspension for at least a couple of football games, but good for the school for taking steps to make sure these guys stay clean and hopefully learn some responsibility.

What part of "felony" do you not understand..... being in possession of a stolen gun is a FELONY...... I'm all for second chances, but I can probably guarantee you this is probably a lot more than their 2nd chance....

If either of these guys had a previous criminal record it would've been made public by now.
The stolen weapon charge wouldn't have stuck anyway. Robinson was the only one charged with having a stolen weapon, it was under the seat of a car he was riding in, and there is reasonable doubt as to weather he knew it was there or not.

Nice subtle racism there. "Their only chance at being productive members of society is to continue to play football at a high level, since they're too stupid to do anything else. Do we really want to take that away from them?"

I submit that the opposite may just as well happen. By getting a free pass, these players will think they are above the law and can get away with continued criminal activity.
The problem with your argument is that you would rather the law be applied based on an individuals status. No one is supposed to be above the law - regardless of position, status, color, or religion. Our system is already being corrupted by allowing connected politicians to get away with things us average Joe's wouldn't get away with (looking at you Crooked Hillary and Bill). Athletes should be held in the same regard as the rest of us when it comes to applying the law. These bozo's should have been charged and a trial could determine their innocence/guilt and any extenuating circumstances.

Maybe it ends up the same way.
But I'd much rather give them a chance than take away their chance.

Are you really that short sighted?
Jun 22, 2016, 10:40 AM
[ in reply to Re: Finebaum calls Louisiana DA a 'buffoon' ] |

Consider the thousand of high school football stars who are following this story. What about the general public? This send a message which leads to a false conclusion. It leads them to believe that their is no judgement to face and no penalty to pay for breaking the law.
It moves the line of right and wrong and move it literally in the wrong direction. You're trying to show mercy, I am quite a fan of mercy. I have no problem when a judge shows mercy and give a minimum sentence for a crime. I especially appreciate that first offenders are given mercy to lessen the impact on their lives and the lives of their families.
Mercy is the option of the judge. The message that DA is sending is that he has the power to show mercy, he's making himself judge and jury and thereby usurping authority our laws provide to judges. He is failing to do his job and miserably failing the people he represents.

I only care about the dumb comment about working in the hot sun. That comment is one of the dumbest comments ever and should get the DA disbarred.
