he says that clemson has not faced a qb all year with abilities of mayfield. Not taking anything away from mayfield, but i think he's wrong here. Kiser at ND and williams at NC were said to give us fits. I like our chances with our aggressive defensive front and their young OL. GO tigers beat the sooners and shut everybody up!

Baker Mayfield has had a really good year. The thing
Dec 17, 2015, 8:13 AM

that impresses me about him is that he's calm and clutch under pressure. He's also hard for defenses to bring down as a runner. To me, it seems that when Oklahoma is down and they get the slightest bit of momentum, Baker Mayfield gets even better. When they were down 14 I believe at Tennessee, he started hitting some passes and running for 1st downs and you could just tell he was about to lead his team to a win.
Kiser and Williams are good, but they're not as good as Mayfield has been this year.

I'm just pointing out that Paul Finebaum is not an idiot for saying Mayfield is the best QB we've faced this year. Now, Finebaum may be an idiot for many other reasons, but not this one.

Depends on which Clemson defense shows up I suppose.

If in fact they show up well rested and healthy, and play like they did the first half of the season, then Oklahoma will struggle to move the ball consistently. If we bring the same defense we had against Syracuse, South Carolina and North Carolina, then it could be a long night.

UNC had guys running wide open downfield. Williams couldn't find them and when he did he couldn't hit them. Mayfield could be a different story. That's the realist in me.
The Clemson fan in me says we're gonna knock Mayfield to the ground every play and look like the same defense Choklahoma faced last year, and the same defense that kicked Notre Dame's #### for 3 quarters.

can be rattled. somewhere in the 3rd quarter marquise had only completed 5 passes and even though he'd finished comparatively strong after that point, the damage had been done for `1.5-2 quarters. the early blitz pressure really seemed to get to him even with the bust.
with the long overdue and well deserved rest, i hope the later game lapses to let teams back in are passed. 2 games remain with a full tank of gas.
i like clemson's chances.

I think his problem is an asset. He's that guy who you put at 'All Time Quarterback,' in the sand lot. He never gives up because he thinks there's a play when their isn't a play. He hangs onto the ball after the point of no return but has the physical ability to move well enough to turn a good tackle into a one arm tackle. He has the strength to break those. He's harder to swat than a fly that won't land.
We will slow their running game and he will take it upon himself to win. I believe that his 'never give up,' will be his demise against us. He's going to get some but he won't get nearly enough before we hit him often and hard enough to knock the resolve out of him.

Can you see Lawson coming off the weak side and hitting him squarely in the mid to lower back, knocking the ball loose and the wind out of his sails? Even worse when a LB get through on the strong side and cuts off his favorite running lane and he turns toward Lawson about the right time to get caught in the rib cage.

Mayfield has had a great season. But Oklahoma hasn't faced a quarterback in the same universe as Watson, so I think that's a moot point. The winner of the Orange Bowl will have to show up with their A-game in order to reach the title game.

We played 5 teams that avg over 400 yards per game. The best defense OU played was UT and their defense allowed 380/game.
In comparison, the month of November was our worst month, when our defense was tired, and we gave up 309 yards/game in 4 games.

Dec 17, 2015, 9:33 AM

So it's a chicken/egg thing that I'm not sure I know the answer to. Are Big12 defenses that bad because they play against high powered offenses week in and week out? Or are Big12 offenses that good because they play against bad defenses week in and week out? The ACC has some really good defenses, but is that because the offenses are that bad? Or are ACC offenses that bad (when compared to B12) because the defenses are that good? Fortunately Clemson is well balanced on both sides of the ball, but I'm not relying on statistics to back up my argument.
I don't think Oklahoma has seen a defense like ours, and I don't think they've played a QB as good as DW4 all year. At the same time, I don't think we've played against a QB and offense as good as Oklahoma's. All that said, I still think Clemson wins 63-17.

Who does he think our D practices against everyday?
Dec 17, 2015, 9:12 AM
|

IMO, our defense faces the best quarterback in the NCAA during practice every week. Maybe we haven't faced one that good on Saturday and maybe we have.
We've seen good running quarterbacks and we've seen good passing quarter backs. We've seen a couple that from all appearances we couldn't rattle. One or two held out until the middle of the second half but we got to all of them eventually.
Maybe PF is right. Maybe we haven't seen all or many of those previously mentioned attributes in one QB but we haven't reached our limit yet. That doesn't mean that we can't be beaten but we haven't, yet.

In a live game situation Clemson hasn't faced a QB on Mayfield's level in terms of being able to perform consistently under a wild amount of pressure. Guys like Kizer and Williams made plays, but they also made mistakes thanks to Shaq and the boys.
With that said, you can absolutely argue that Mayfield hasn't seen a front like Shaq and the boys as well.

doesn't know what Clemson/Venables type pressure means. I think his emotion keeps his head on straight for a while but if we push him off the deep end early in the game and then again early in the second half it will be over before he figures out what happened.
I don't think they have one single man on their offensive line that we can't out perform with our defensive linemen. I know ### good and well he hasn't seen that in his entire life much less one game.
