I never liked him, but he used to be a crowd favorite year after year; lately he has taken on more of a villain role.

There have been no villain at Augusta since Jack started over taking Arnie as the best player. Nobody at Augusta ever pulls against a player.

I beg to differ

I was there on Sunday in 1982. I was at 18 green when they posted Craig Stadler’s bogey on 16, dropping him into a tie with Dan Pohl. The crowd went crazy celebrating. I didn’t particularly like Stadler, but I was appalled. I pulled for him in the playoff, and have been a Stadler fan ever since. Wonder what ever happened to Dan Pohl?

But your point is well taken with regard to Masters patrons. Typically very knowledgeable, very respectful. I suspect Mickelson will be treated that way.

he would receive a Tiger'ish reception. Tiger received his usual loud reception on the couple of holes we saw him (8 green and 9 tee-off). There's still a large crowd following him around the course.

I also wasn't a big Phil fan until on (2) separate days he gave my 8-year-old daughter a ball on the course (2008 maybe). On the 1st day, we were sitting at the back of #8 green and he rolled the ball to her as he came off the green. She wasn't paying much attention and thought a golfer had hit the ball right at her feet. She backed away like it was a rattlesnake. The next day, we were behind #8 at the patrons crossing to the #9 tee. We were along the rope and he stepped over to her and handed her a ball, it was a pretty cool day.

Polite and reserved. Clearly no longer beloved.
