Anyone here ever live in or spent much time in Portugal? If so, will you share some insight into the country please? Things like cost of living, language barriers, crime, transportation, medical facilities, etc.. Am extremely interested in the city of Porto if you have ever been there.
Thank you

It was. It made me feel great.
You being the hypocrite you are. How many posters have you called immature and idiots for posting non football related messages on the football board? Yet, as a hypocrite you do it.
It sucks to be called out doesn't it?

Great cost of living especially outside of Lisbon and along the coast. They have been a hot spot for digital nomads and retirees. I know locals are starting to get a little frustrated but overall very receptive. I am in early stages of deciding between Portugal, Tbilisi, Bogota, and Malaysia.

I combined it with my Spain trip. I loved both Portugal and Spain. (Personally liked Spain better but that may not be a fair assessment since I spent like 17 days in Spain). I was in Lisbon though for most of the trip and didn’t make it up to Porto. I bet it’s absolutely beautiful.

Thank you. Do most major hotels, restaurants and shopping locations speak English or not? Most places in Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria speak English. I may have to brush up on a little Portuguese.

and the Douro Valley…we didn't have any trouble with the language barrier, no different than every other European country for the most part. The people were friendly, the cost of food (both street food and higher end places) were less than in the US. Most everyone we came across was friendly and welcoming.
Porto (and everywhere else too) was a beautiful place. Glad we went and likely will be back in the future.

Portugal is the most affordable country in Western Europe. US dollars go a long way there. Public transportation in Porto and Lisbon is excellent, clean and safe. The homicide rate in Portugal is a little less than 1 per 100k, compared to approximately 7 per 100k in the US and 17 per 100k in South Carolina. The worst things you might realistically have to deal with in terms of crime are pickpockets or someone breaking into your car, if you choose to own one. Most Portuguese speak at least a little English, especially young people and in the cities, but you'll be expected to learn Portuguese if you plan on staying there. They're used to having British expats living there, though. You would qualify for public health insurance that covers pretty much everything. It's not free, but it's much cheaper than the US.

I just returned from 3weeks in Portugal

I cruised down the Douro from the border of Spain, spent 4 days in Porto, a week in Lisbon and half a week in Lagos in the Algarve. My girlfriend is originally from Lisbon so it is home for her.
Porto is a lovely city but like Lisbon, the hills are killer. Traffic is growing so it’s a factor to consider.
I’ve travelled quite a lot worldwide and Portugal has extraordinarily nice people. Language will be a bit of a problem but many speak English so you will get by nicely. Crime is very low. In Spain, watch your wallet but in Portugal, just not the same level of concern. As in any city you take some precautions but it is very, very safe.
Is it cheaper? In many ways you missed out on those days as Portugal is the new “in” place and that has caused prices to rise. Certainly less expensive than London or Paris but you are going to feel rich.
For most ex-pats it is the bureaucracy that gets them.
A lovely European capital with rich history & great food.

I can’t think of any large city in Europe where speaking English was a problem (although some Parisians do it seethingly). I do remember trying to go to the Hotel restaurant in Lisbon at about 7:00pm……they looked at us as if we were from Neptune and politely informed us that dinner didn’t begin until 9:00pm. Like most Europeans,…… #1 - enjoying living #2-#26 - everything else #27 - work

Beer and wine was cheaper than Diet Coke. The food was great and I enjoyed myself. Take the time to see logos and Evora. Also there are some Paleolithic ruins that are off the beaten path but if you do t mind driving they are worth seeing.
