Favorite practice sayings from coaching.

The thread with Coach Rumph "Are you the hammer or the nail?" got me to thinking. What are some of your favorite sayings that coaches use during practices?

Here are some of mine.

I coached track for a few years. The kids new me for saying, "It's a great day to get fast!" several times every day. (Then on the days of the meets, I would change it to, "It's a great day to BE fast.")

Football, I coached defensive backs.
"Deeper than the deepest."
"When you stay deep, good things happen."

Linemen
"The hammer always wins."
"Low man wins."

Opening coin toss
1. If you win, defer. Then after the other team elects to receive, "Defend the clock." (Normally in HS stadiums there was one clock and it was in the endzone. We wanted to be looking at the clock in the second quarter.)

Why are these sayings useful though?

Shouldn’t defensive ends naturally believe they are the hammer and not the nail?

It fired us up, but in retrospect, that would probably have led to several clipping penalties.

My HS basketball coach - “if you want to play for me you gotta play good defense. If you wanna play good defense, you gotta be the meanest son of a b!tch on the court”!
Said while holding onto the front of my jersey and about 2 inches from my face. Bad breath and spit and all.

BTW, my favorite coaching football word.

Slobberknock.

I used it all the time - practice, games, watching game tape.

The other coaches would laugh at first (a lot younger than me) but they slowly got to the point they used it too.

Play to the echo of the whistle.....

The game was different than it is now, but I remember good coaches would always say, "I don't care if you get a late hit out of bounds/unsportsmanlike pentalty.... but if you do.... you better knock him out".

That wouldn't fly these days.....

Military great sayings in a gun fight is, "The best medicine in a gun fight is fire superiority"
