The only thing that concerns me about going to the Big 12.
May 19, 2012, 6:15 PM
|
|
I realize there are concerns about the extra travel plus its effect on local recruiting, a conference dominated by Texas, the Longhorn Network, etc. There are always going to be downsides to a move. I'm not convinced those can't be dealt with. What concerns me is what can't be controlled. If in 5 years, Texas and Oklahoma decide to move to the PAC 10 for whatever reasons, motivation and enticement, then we are done. We will be stuck in a dysfunctional conference with a bunch of podunks. Though the ACC has more than its fair share of football podunks, at least they have credibility in basketball. I realize that agreements can be signed, penalties imposed and that Texas and Oklahoma will say that "we are in it for the long haul, blah, blah, blah". Contracts and words are broken all the time. I don't trust Texas nor Oklahoma. Heck, I don't trust FSU (if for some reason the SEC was willing to take them in but, not us, FSU would throw us under the bus faster than Bobby Bowden could say "dad gumit". Everybody looks out for old number one. I guess if that happened, we could ask the ACC to take us back. But, A., that would be humiliating and B. they would extract every ounce of blood from us before taking us back.

The only place we should go to is the sec period. It makes no sense to go to big 12.

Yes but, they don't want nor need us. Our only posible options are the Big 12 and the ACC.

I realize that. The point is that if we get left in a Big 12 conference that no longer includes Texas and Oklahoma, stop turning the BBQ spit and bring on the sauce, because we will be done.

is a PAC 12 guy. He has made it clear he'd like to see UT in the PAC 12. If the money was right for both UT and the PAC 12 it could happen (particularly if everyone is trying to get to 16).

If they want to do something they'll do it. Even if we have some signed notarized form from them, they'll buy their way out of it.

The BigXII isn't gonna give an offer in writing unless they mean it. To back out would be too costly.
Regardless, we're in. We have an agreement.......binding.
We'll accept.
Case closed.

The end result would be the same, regardless. Texas and Oklahoma would be gone. That's the way these things are played. They'd come to a negotiated settlement as always and be gone.

In Texas, we are dealing with people who have no ethics. Contracts are made to be broken. That's a way of life in that state.

Is the BigXII conference HQ in TX? I'm asking.
May 19, 2012, 7:09 PM

I don't know. TX is the one state in which legal issues are quite cloudy. I used to be a life/health insurance agent. All the shady third-party health insurance companies were domiciled in TX. There was a reason for it.
This is inter-state commerce, however. It wouldn't be litigated under TX statutes.
I didn't TD you, btw. I'm enjoying the conversation.

And I was one of the very first to support going to the Big 12. But that doesn't cloud my thinking to not realize that a move to the Big 12 is very risky.

I don't doubt that. I'm just unsure about Texas and Oklahoma keeping their word. That's the only thing that concerns. The other concerns raised don't worry me. I just don't trust those guys. I just don't.

this IS a far-fetched scenario. The Chancellor of UT....
May 19, 2012, 6:34 PM

along with the other schools in the Big12 have signed a grant of rights for many years (6 I think) which means even if they move to a new conference the Big 12 will own their TV rights. That would be crushingly expensive for even Texas.

A 20 Million one time fee is do-able, esp when you make more with the new TV Contract. To give up your old contract AND the new contract for over 5 years is not a workable option. Not even for Texas.

The original grant of rights - which is credited as stabilizing the Big XII - was for 6 years. However, the new ESPN/Fox contract calls for an extension of that until 2025. This should serve as a significant impediment to anyone going anywhere in the Big XII.
