Here's how dumb the place where I work is...

Apr 8, 2013, 2:24 PM

just got called into my boss's office for the second time in the last couple of months because somebody told him to make sure I wasn't wearing jeans, because I'd have to be sent home if I was. Apparently there are some people in the office who consider themselves the clothes police, and they can't tell the difference between blue chinos and blue jeans. Morons.

"business casual" on Mo. and Fri, ties from Tues- Thurs

Apr 8, 2013, 2:48 PM [ in reply to It should be every Americans right to wear whatever they ]

I really don't mind though, as I actually like looking sharp. And, of course, midwesterners don't actually seem to know that business casual doesn't really mean a collared shirt and pants (other than jeans), but I'll take it.

When I worked in DC we had to wear jackets and ties whenever Congress was voting, but if they weren't voting it was pretty much anything goes (with the exception of shorts).

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ties are one of the dumbest things human beings have

Apr 8, 2013, 2:52 PM

come up with, I'm not sure why you'd want a ready to go noose attached to your neck all day. I'm business casual, I usually wear nice dress pants and a button down, and I feel like I look just as nice as somebody with a suit on. Yours doesn't sound too bad, I'm not sure I could work somewhere that required a suit and tie or anything like that. I'm not going to spend my life uncomfortable.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't mind ties...

Apr 8, 2013, 3:01 PM

because you can pretty much wear the same suit and shirt color combo, but if you switch ties it's like a whole different outfit.

I think ties were originally part of military regalia, but became fashionable when the French saw the cravats that the Croation army was wearing and brought the style back to France. Why they've hung on for so long, I don't know, but I do think they make men's dress clothing a little more interesting.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's probably fine in college...

Apr 8, 2013, 3:10 PM [ in reply to Maybe I'm just not that much into fashion... ]

and it might pass in places where you either don't want to stick out with how you dress or where being showy in dress is considered rude. But I've kind of realized, as I've gotten further from college, that one thing a guy can do to distinguish himself is to dress well.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I also think that depends on where you live and what

Apr 8, 2013, 3:14 PM

industry you're in. If I went to 90% of my customers with a suit and tie on, they'd be turned off. Likewise, in Chicago the way you dress probably has more of a bearing on your life that it does in South Carolina. City people are more into fashion IMO. Most people around here aren't going to pick out the fact that you're wearing some designer loafers or whatever, whereas that's probably more identifiable in a bigger city.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I worked in an architecture office years ago

Apr 8, 2013, 3:17 PM

Apr 8, 2013, 3:24 PM

You'd see dudes who were wearing worn out short sleeve button downs and a big fat tie, or ring around the collar dress shirts that should have been tossed months ago with ugly, stained out of date ties.

You're right; had they been allowed to wear nice pants and a polo style shirt, they probably would have looked nicer.
