Eclipse peoples....assplain something to me

Why is there a run on special eclipse glasses now? I was going to grab some for the kids but nobody in York County has them and Amazon is selling them for like $20 each (FuckThatNoise).
If I go look at the sun today, can't it do the same damage as any other day? What is so special about the eclipse as it pertains to permanent vision issues? Is it because more people will be PURPOSEFULLY looking at the sun? Or did Alan just create a niche market for Clemson Coke bottles and eclipse glasses?

inclination to turn away to kick in.
The average person can't look at the sun for more than a few seconds, but during an eclipse like the one we'll be having I think it will be possible to look at it for minutes at a time.

over your eyeballs. Let it set for 2 minutes, and then look at the sun for as long as you like.
Everyone knows ##### has terrific UV light protective qualities.

The glasses allow you to see the moon move into place over the sun and move out from in front of the sun. If you're in the path of totality you'll be able to remove the glasses during the 2 mins 30 sec were the sun is covered.

Yesterday this 10 at work that is a box of rocks upstairs asked me if her kids need to wear the glasses outside if they are just going out to play.
The like the event itself causes blindness lul Bless her heart and her teddies

was interviewing an eclipse expert and asked whether we need to be worried about our pets during the eclipse, and whether they needed any eye protection. SMFH. The scientist did a pretty admirable job not laughing in her face.
