Coaches Salaries and NIL spending

Random thought and question.

Considering a part of coaches salaries used to align with not just winning but recruiting great talent to maintain or build a program.

Should schools get a discount if the NIL collective essentially buys a team a lot of coaches could win with? (See Ohio state and Ryan Day over last month).

To me, makes sense the coach forfeit a portion of these massive salaries. Maybe others feel different.

the work load has probably increased with free agency, constant recruiting, including current players

That’s fair. Guess my point is what the coaches do and say matter less now in the recruitment part. It’s how much money is coming my way.

Saban retiring is not a coincidence. He’s said it’s bc of these factors and more.

If coaches win, the salaries reflect that and if coaches lose, they take the settlement and look for another job. No coach would sign a contract based on recruiting.

Guess I’m saying today, most coaches aren’t recruiting high school as much as other programs (Clemson and a few others excluded). Buying a roster isn’t recruiting and def gives those schools and coaches a huge advantage imo.

My thought is a general allowance of 3M let’s say. If they spend 10 via the collective, maybe 20% of the overage is deducted from their pay. So a 10mill a year coach “only” gets 8.6mill.

I struggle with idea of paying a coach 10mill but then that coach asks for another 10mill for a roster they can win with. Aren’t we paying that person 10 mill a year for a reason??

Every school still relies heavily on high school recruiting.

And using the transfer portal is still recruiting. Calling it "buying a roster" is ridiculous.

I’ll give you high school. But the portal is pay for play; as such you are purchasing a roster or a part of it. Not many kids transferring without a cash incentive. You know this though

Don't argue with a jello mold.***

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Coaches shouldn't have to donate part of their salary to NIL.

They are paid based on what the market bears, most notably what their employer feels they are worth.

Yes, they are paid a lot, but that's only because there is so much money in college football these days. It's also the reason why I understand players wanting a piece of the pie. I don't like it, but I get it.
