2022 unhappiest state workers

Jul 13, 2022, 1:04 PM

This morning I had the opportunity to deal with 2 different sets of state workers: The Charleston County tax office, and the SC DNR.

Unfortunately, The SCDNR takes the prize for the most unhappiest, unfriendliest and most miserable state worker for the 2nd year in a row. OTOH, The CHS county tax workers were very polite, and actually helpful.

After driving slam to the edge of James Island to get to the DNR office, I was scolded for NOT knowing they no longer print boat registrations at the SCDNR office (I'm not sure WHY I would know that, even though I was rhetorically asked "You didn't know that?" by Mr SCDNR guy). I was filling out some paperwork, and the guy who was behind me in line must have known him, (at least he acted like he did) and asked Mr SCDNR Happy Guy why he was working the counter today. I overheard how terrible it was to have to deal with the public every day, and that's why this guy was doing it because "Nobody else will do it. They won't come to work and deal with them."

While I can understand that to a point...There were 3 people (counting me) in the DNR office in the 20 or so minutes I was there. How bad can it be? How many people actually go to a DNR office? Apparently I was stupid and ignorant for doing so. How many people do they deal with in a days time? 20?

work 20 years, get a pension, and a lifetime of perks of never being hassled by DNR on the water?. That guy will be retired next year getting a fee check, and I'll still be working until I'm dead. What are they so miserable about?

Doesn't make sense. Why can't they be happy and carefree

I'm not sure what you are asking

Jul 13, 2022, 1:44 PM

I'm still married, at least as far as I know. My wife isn't overly enthused about our current living arrangement, but neither am I. That doesn't make anyone's relationship better.

I'm renting a place I wouldn't have lived in when I was in college, but it's in a good location. I've never cared less about a place I live, so that's actually a pretty big relief and kind of an upside to this dump.

Since I'm feeling wordy today, here's the rest of that synopsis:

I bought a house in Murrell's Inlet about 70 yards from the marsh walk back in April, and sold it 10 days later because it needed more work than I wanted to put in it, and my wife and I decided in the end, we really didn't want to live there.

I've been back and forth with some realtors in Marathon about two houses in Big Pine and Tavernier, but I'm having difficulty getting past insurance cost. That might put a stop to thinking about living in the keys, unless I hit the lottery. $20K-$25K of insurance a year is expensive, at least for someone one of my meager means. I've been looking for a couple month rental in Islamorada that we can take the dog and the boat and live there for a bit, but that's kinda difficult to find if I'm not spending ~$8K-$10k/month. And I'm not.

No you know everything I do.

I just meant living like a bachelor, not actually separated

Jul 13, 2022, 1:54 PM [ in reply to I'm not sure what you are asking ]

no, I just missed your moving out I think. Prolly hard to be patient, but renting seems best until prices drop some more??? My co-worker just did a long term airbnb in the mountains. Now he's doing one in Charleston. Cool idea, prolly at least $4,500/mo also....may be $10K/mo...not sure what kind of digs he settled in.

Well, we have a lot of boxes piled up

Jul 13, 2022, 2:06 PM

that I've determined we're going to throw away because Obviously we don't need them.

Honestly, I'd like to throw all of it away, furniture and all, and just start over again.

Lemme give you some advice here, IE

Jul 13, 2022, 2:22 PM [ in reply to I'm not sure what you are asking ]

When the wife gets lippy, inform her in an authoritative tone it’s her ####### fault she got a job that requires you to live in the States, else you two would be happily idling away in Bermuda or on the beach in Spain or Croatia staring at the Med and congratulating yourselves for finding the good life. Her fault.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think I actually said that once

Jul 13, 2022, 2:25 PM

And I'll let you guess how that went over.

It started with "I could quit and YOU can pay for everything"

And then I think I replied with something similar too "I already do..what's the difference?"

And then the fight started.
