Do you remember when you got your Clemson ring...

8

Feb 13, 2023, 11:47 AM

The resolution on the ring was very sharp and pronounced. Every time I'd shake hands with somebody the Tiger head and the star would dig in and sometimes draw blood. My son is about to learn about this when he gets his ring later this semester.
I still have a callus on my little finger where the ring has rubbed for 40 years. The resolution on the ring has smoothed and flattened somewhat over the years, but it is one of my most prized possessions to this day.
Go Tigers!!!

I just had mine resized last year. They cleaned it too and

made it look brand new.

Hales Jewelers in Greenville resized mine for me.***

My daughter sent mine back to the manufacturer to get it resized for my birthday a couple of years ago. They also replaced the onyx face because it was scratched. It cost nothing but the shipping to get it there. (She got off cheap!) All done under warranty. I understand they will resize the ring one time.
They cleaned it and buffed it and it looks like brand new. Not bad for a 40 year old ring.

I think the manufacturer at that time was Herff Jones. (1983)

I dropped mine off at Turner's in Seneca 12 years ago. They sent it back to Jostens who resized it and put in a new stone for no charge. Still looks brand new as I never wore it to work.

Yeah, we tell our daughter our ring ceremony consisted of some grad student in the bookstore checking off our names on a big green computer printout. We are looking forward to her ring ceremony in a couple of months.

I mine from the bookstore. Paid about $125
00. Lost it throwing a cricket out the house my wife wanted me to get rid of. Looked for weeks even used metal detector but never found. Ordered a new one for $350.00. Bought a house in 1983, prime rate was 21% and conventional loans were 17% but Federal Land was 11.25%. Today's interest rate is not the problem but the principal is what will get you. My wife and I saved enough to pay 20% down with 5% origination fee and 5% Federal Land Bank stock. I have also sent my ring back to Jostens to resize. They replaced the oynx but I think they made a new ring because mine was really worn down. Miss that ring because I don't have enough time left to get it that condition again. Still a prized possession.
I live 200 miles from Clemson with season baseball tickets. See ya Friday.

Yeah, i remember... I didn't get my class ring until my 30th birthday.

3

Feb 13, 2023, 12:12 PM

In 1979-80 the price of gold was at it's all-time historical high... almost $2500/oz adjusted for inflation. So I couldn't afford one, coz I was po. My (ex)wife ordered it for my 30th. Same reason I couldn't buy a house right out of college... mortgage rates in 1981 were at an all-time high... 18%.

No, not a typo. 18 percent.

Just lucky I guess.

Sounds like you timed everything perfectly. I know you're glad you got it later.
And by the way, the first new car I bought in 1985 had an interest rate of 17%. Our first house in 1985 had an interest rate of 14%. People now are pizzed if they pay an interest rate above 4%.

30 year, fixed rate, etc. At 2.5% the payment is $1185/month. At 18% it is $4521. Just a tad different.

A Proud Day

3

Feb 13, 2023, 12:17 PM

I picked mine up un-ceremoniously from the Bookstore and I was on cloud nine for weeks.

Here is a funny side story, my Dad had melted his '57 ring in an electrical mishap but I was able to order him a replacement. One of his classmates looked at Dad's (new) ring and declared it was in much better shape than his own. Dad never let on what happened, he just said "Well, I have taken good care of it."

it a frivolous expense at the time. I recently enquired about cost of a ring, and they are VERY expensive now! I have been without one since I graduated in 1976, so, nothing new.

If I remember right, mine WOULD have been around $300 back in 1976. Probably the reason family didn't spring for one is that I lost my high school ring after I had only had it a couple of months.

But, it turned out I didn't really lose it. We evidently had a young grand kid playing in the house at that time, because, moving some toys around out of the way about a year later, I heard something rattling around inside a Mattel Hot Wheels racetrack power tower, and lo and behold, out falls my high school ring. It got permanently lost in a total loss house fire in 1977, as probably my Clemson ring would have as well, had I purchased one.

Graduated Dec '73 and likely got mine around that time. Sadly don't recall exactly when or how. Wore it to work occassionaly and to dress up events so it's in excellent shape. Had it resized before covid, then lost 11 lbs. and now it's a bit loose. Have to be somewhat careful with it. Sometimes wear my late wife's ring as it's a perfect fit for my pinky and feels good to have something of hers with me.
