DJ observations after a season

Dec 29, 2021, 11:01 PM

I'm thrilled he chose Clemson! (Obviously a great decision,) but I can't wait until Clemson can choose a better option running the offense.

After UGA, I wouldn't have trusted my receivers, line, or new RB's lack of blocking either. He got "Maverick after Goose dies" kind of rattled. However, I think there's also a very obvious limit to what he is able to process mentally. There's no reading of coverages or DL, pre-snap adjustments, blitz hot reads, he's late and rushes throws which eliminates touch, misses routes, and I could literally list 5 more things, but the horse already gone... TE and then Steerer had to downsize the decision tree and rebuild his confidence without micromanaging him to the point of burnout. I'm sure DJ is well aware of what we all see and the stuff we don't. (Deshaun and Trevor always had things they wanted to improve on too...)

Maybe it's a permanent wall, or maybe an off season to study, or a true freshman lighting a fire... He lost confidence in the offense and himself, and the offense lost confidence in him.

I'll also say, as frustrating as tonight was to watch, I'll highlight something that's a bigger deal than I initially thought about. Broken or sprained fingers is usually just about blocking out pain, but I'm certain I couldn't throw a football with a metal/tape splint on my index finger further than my 3 year old daughter could either. Every throw seems like it has been a duck lately, and the time in the air and accuracy gets worse with distance.

I like seeing people overcome and succeed, but I've seen a lot of dreams die too. I'm pulling for him as a person regardless of whether he's our best option, but let's hope we have a great starter and solid backup in 22!

Great game defense! Get to work offense! Go Tigers!

That's one heck of a smart summation of DJ's 2021 season, Roadracing7.

Also a sober (yet optimistic) outlook for 2022.

Happy New Year and here's to a whooping good season in 2022!

You can't improve on quickness much. You can increase speed some by losing weight. He is an inaccurate passer and does not read the field very well. Hopefully he can improve in these areas in the off season.
