retiring and today's college athletics with NIL and the transfer portal? I can't recall where I read it. Perhaps someone else saw it.

But, if he leaves your school before getting a degree from your school, he counts as one of your scholarship numbers (85 for football) for four years after he leaves.

Presto, problem solved.

Coaches would be far more selective in who they recruited out of HS. And, coaches who recruited through the portal would be far more selective in who they recruited from the portal.

student, carrying a full load of classes, in good academic standing, on track to graduate with a legitimate degree. Academics first, with same exact entrance requirements as all regular students.

I think it would apply to a lot of players. If players aren't real students, then it's not really college football.
