Did 31-3 vs 24-3 move us up a spot in the poll? I know

Oct 9, 2022, 4:38 PM

some questioned working for that last score, including the game announcers and the BC coach, but look what happened in the polls.

It almost as if the pollsters see nothing but the final score of a given game.

Anyway ... I guess I’m saying that getting that last TD was important for a lot of reasons and that we cannot afford to settle for scores that can be construed by the pollsters (and later the CFP) as having been a “struggle” ...

At 31-3, we looked better than Michigan.

Not sure that happens at 24-3.

Some pollsters are totally lazy and only look at final scores.

Hence the coots getting some votes. They totally missed that Kentucky was missing their QB.

Well Due West, if you were a pollster, how would you watch 50 to 60 football games on a given Fall Saturday? Many West Coast games don’t end until 1 or 2 a.m. here. And your votes have to be in around noon on Sunday.

Other than looking at final scores, what criteria would you use to rank the teams? Remember your time is very limited.

1972 Tiger® What you are suggesting is: "they really don't know who is or isn't good"!

Thus: "if you are historically a good program or from a perceived good conference or had a good loss they give you the benefit of the doubt"!

Problem with that: so many people put so much stock in these rankings. Marketing firms figure they reach more people from the team that has thet number in front of it's name. Perhaps, they should only produce the rankings later in the week!

Since as you said, they can't watch them all. They rely on mneumonic devices too heavily to come up with who is or isn't ranked.

With great power comes great responsibility.

And you don’t have to watch every game. Reading a couple paragraphs and a 3 minute highlight should suffice.

We were only 3 pts behind Michigan in last week's AP

Oct 9, 2022, 4:43 PM

So yeah that extra td could have made the difference. But I don't think Dabo did it to move up a poll spot, he just wanted get a sluggish offense back on track.

Oh I agree ... the reps for DJ were important. The success of this reps gave us the last TD ... and the last TD had the side benefit of moving us up a spot.

Potentially

But that just underscores the true irrelevance of the polls. Just win and keep your name in consideration.

Especially this year where the 4 teams who have been in front of us (last week) are made up of 2 pairs of teams that play each other. Just win and we're in. Every year there's been this discussion about worrying about being left out, and every year we deserved to be in we have been. This year will be no different.

Yes and no.....it hasnt mattered for us to this point in cfp history

Oct 9, 2022, 5:03 PM

BUT in a scenario where 2 teams are being compared for that 4th spot, you best believe a team that wins convincingly every week will look better than one than "just does enough" all else relatively equal.

I still maintain

An undefeated P5 conference champ will never be left out unless there are 5 of them (which has never happened thus far, and won't this year). Relax, win and we're in.

The CFP committee doesn’t factor in margin of victory. They do factor in game control though. To show how that works let’s say you’re in a close back and forth game and the game is tied with a few minutes left before you score a touchdown on offense and another on a pick 6 to win by 14. Now compare that to being up multiple scores all game long and leading by 28 with a few minutes to go and the other team scores 2 garbage time touchdowns late in the game against your backups resulting in a 14 point win.

You struggled in the 1st example but won without issue in the 2nd one. Point is, the way the CFP does things they really don’t care if you win 24-3 or if you score late to make it 31-3 instead.

Re: Did 31-3 vs 24-3 move us up a spot in the poll? I know

Oct 9, 2022, 5:14 PM

Absolutely did!

And, I concur it seems like the voters don't look into the facts of the game. They only look at the final score.
Clemson for example, often plays a lot of younger players instead of leaving the starters in and probably increasing the final score.

Hopefully, the playoff committee is different and takes things like missing QB, not running up the score, etc. will be considered.

They just did it to create more hype for the next weeks games.... higher ranking = higher viewership = more ad revenue for the TV networks....

If you ever want to know the "why" to anything... follow the money
