Defense with the offense we run will never be

and one of the best OCs in the land. We don't have much talent or experience or depth on defense, and we have a proven DC in his first year who just inherited this mess. This is essentially the same defensive personnel who struggled mightily last year, minus it's three best players who were drafted into the NFL. This group of players went into a very hostile environment and led for most of the game against the #4 ranked team in the country, only to very predictably have our undermanned defense buckle at the end. They gave us a thrill but came up short.

Is Venables the answer? It is yet to be determined. I want it fixed as bad as anybody, and maybe Venables can coach this young defense up as the season progresses, but as much as I hate to say it, we got who we got and real improvement will only come with recruiting. Be prepared to see the defense struggle, because they will. Meanwhile, enjoy the great offense and hope we can score a lot of points. That's the way it is.

Bad defensive recruiting.

Our LB's are bad. They don't shed blocks or read the game well and they're liabilities in coverage, and as a group their tackling is atrocious. That's on Kevin Steele, who approved, signed, and trained this group.

It's also pretty obvious we're weaker at end than any point in our recent past. We got zero pressure - none - with a four-man rush, and these guys consistently have been getting sealed at the edge. Blame who you want there - but Marion Hobby needs to see some improvement out of this bunch by year's end or he'll have some 'splaining to do.

DT is okay, if thin. Our starters do all right, but once we get to that third and fourth guy people start gashing us up the gut. Still, Dan Brooks' guys are basically the only group on D getting an even passing grade right now.

We've got a secondary basically full of safeties. Been awhile since I've seen a group of CB's this bad at Clemson. Those golden years when we had guys like Chris Chancellor, Crezdon Butler, Marcus Gilchrist, and Byron Maxwell stacking the two-deep at CB are long gone, for sure. Considering these are all Coach Cheese's guys there's only one guy to blame there. Harbison has put a really bad secondary on the field, and that's all there is to be said.

We need a talent infusion on D, and quickly. Hopefully this next class will stick, and provide one. For sure we can dangle the "early playing time" card because there's plenty to be had right now at literally every position on D.

Little shocking to see how bad our talent has dipped on that side of the ball, really.
