Deer WCCP: Any ad using the phrase This Holiday should be dropped on principle

Every year there are increasingly more ads using the phrase “this holiday” to presumably refer to the Christmas season. This is not a call-it-Christmas-or-you’re-a-commie poast. It’s uncomfortably PC, that’s all.

Reductionism + social obsequiousness + woke = cringey terms like “sus” and “totes” and “bet” and “this holiday.”

If I get a fax from a deputy moderator about this, so be it.

I don't buy any Christmas cards that have Happy Holidays. I buy only Merry Christmas ones.

Well happy holidays refers to two holidays, therefore holidays. Now if it just said holiday for Christmas then I agree

That’s totally fine and I resonate with that conviction, but I’m pointing the finger more at organizations so afraid to say Christmas that they would negate it and all other traditions of significance in an effort to bolster their social credits. In their minds, the only valid stance is “nothing is valid.”

That's been going on for the last 30 years. While I agree, it's nothing new and not a result of the "current" political climate.

Agreed. Nothing new, but certainly something increasingly symptomatic of the throat grip of the absurd belief that “the only thing that must be held as true is that nothing is true.”

No one can live out that philosophy peacefully.

Has it ever occurred to you that not everybody celebrates Christmas? And if said person does not celebrate Christmas, it does not make them a bad person?

Holiday season makes no sense.

It should be during this Christmas and Hanukkah season.

The founder of Kwanzaa is a sad read. The entire thing was academic construct built to oppose Christianity because he claimed it was a “white” religion. So, so sad.

That occurs to me all the time. Literally every day.

That’s why I don’t walk around with the glaring expectation to be greeted with “Merry Christmas” from every man, woman, and child.

But you better believe no man, woman, or child walks around saying “this holiday.” That’s marketing whitewash that, thankfully, isn’t even part of our social lexicon. It’s PR CYA, and ironically as the feigned multicultural catch-all tries to gather its nets around all obscure beliefs and truth claims in the name of inclusion, it squeezes all the weirdness out into the water and poisons it for everybody.

Precisely.

And if you don't celebrate Christmas, or Hanukah, there really is no "Holiday" to celebrate.

Being a good or bad person has nothing to do with it. Commercially profiting off Jesus Christ's birthday and calling it the "Holiday Season" has annoyed believers for years.

Christmas is the celebration of His birthday which is observed on Dec 25th. It's not the holiday of Santa Claus, Trees, or Holiday things.

If “holiday season,” I’m good.
I wish all the marketers could
Just say what they mean
Instead of agree’n’
To bow to dead block of wood.

The dead block of wood is fear of offensiveness. Isaiah 44 is a good read even for nonchristian moralists…

If you want Christmas customers, say it. If you want Hanukkah people, say it. If you want Solstice people, say it. If you want them all, say “holiday season” or whatever culturally honorable term respectfully includes them all. Don’t make one up and look around the room winking and nodding and waiting for John Q. Public to approve your foolishness.

I realize it’s a nuanced thing, but it’s not just about pandering to the anti-Christmas sentiment. Lumping everyone into a cool-kid, abbreviated bruh term that’s not even professional use of the language is an undignified admission of insecurity and a cheapening of all traditions, especially if you’re broadcasting your brand into the public sphere on the auspices of legitimacy and value, etc.

In a supposed effort to affirm multiculturalism in America, these insecurities have, in fact, resulted in the erasure of them all. If everything is soooo important, nothing is important.

Happy Wednesday mornin, soywaker®!

You want to hear a radio ad that says “ this Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years period, come visit our store….?”
You take it as anti Christian or anti Christmas… why???

Maybe it’s not all about anti-Christian conspiracy.

Certainly don’t wanna hear somebody henpecking specific celebrated days in a long list - in my view, that communicates almost as much servility to fear of offense as using “this holiday.”

I don’t get too caught up in the anti-Christmas conspiracy. The fact is we live in a culture where Christmas is celebrated by an exceeding majority, even if not univerally coupled with the birth of Jesus. The annual uptick in US retail sales every November and December is because we live in a Christmas culture. Christians will argue “there’s no Christmas without Christ,” but the fact is our culture has built Christmas into a commercial/traditional machine that will stand on its own two legs with or without explicitly Christian doctrine.

As mentioned previously, I don’t mind hearing references to “the holiday season” as much because it’s at least consistent with reality and a responsible, professional use of the English language. “This holiday” is an admission that it’s better to be dismissive and/or dishonest about the realities of American culture than to risk the perception of somehow not being universally inclusive.
