like you.
has there been a better defense at the clemson university since the days you used to comb the hills with your spear in juan hand and your aspis in the other, than what venables & his 300 rolled out this year?

1981 was most dominant (see Georgia game)

One reason was, I believe, that we never played a dominant passing team. Closest to this was Wake Forest but they had no defense. We were death against strictly running teams. If the BCS had existed then we would have played either Georgia or Pittsburg for NC (I Think). We would have beaten Georgia again, I believe, but Dan Marino and Pitt might have lit us up. We'll never know. The game has changed a lot and our CBs in 1981 were not to today's standards. Safeties and Bandits were.

Didn't see his car at the breakfast club on my way to work. Must've had a long night. And by long night I mean prior to the airing of the Andy Griffith show. And by work I mean occupying a chair.

I heard him say when a reporter asked about Clemson being #1 was:
"If there's a better team in the country, I haven't seen them play."

I'm close to 42 so I was around but the only thing I Remember from 1981 is scrapping my #### off trying to break dance and sneaking looks at my dad's playboy s.

I'd be interested to hear from Major Harris - or his mom, bless her heart. "They're not giving him any protection. He's running for his life." still rings loud.

and also it is rare in today's game to have a dominant defense the way we did this past season. This past season ranks up there with the best. Another thing that really makes this past seasons defense look more impressive is how the current rules favor offenses.

Was the nastiest D I have seen in my lifetime. The best athletes on the team.....a bunch of headknocking speed demons with ruthless attitude.

I for one absolutely loves our D and how well they execute and shut down plays. I love the O, but this D that CBV has created is a thing of beauty. Watching the D alone is worth the price of the ticket. Watching them stop teams in 4th-and-short situations is freaking awesome. It sucks the very life out of the opponents, and you can watch their coaches bend at the waist in disgust. CLASSIC. Our D should hold their heads high as they deserve kudos for dominating good teams with ease. I know we've had some great D teams in the past, but this one is so special, that it raises the bar and will become the new baseline to which all future D's will be compared.

Agree. I've watched 30 years of Clemson D and this year's team was the best

And most fun to watch. Hard to compare to 80-81 because teams didn't pass as much back then.

to the bingo parlor to make sure the ole gals were ready for some A-C-T-S-H-U-N!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cereally, we won the National Championship with our '81 defense. All others paled into insignificance after that blessed event...until now. Brent Venables has put together something to behold...which we did this past season, for the most part, and despite attrition, confidence is high that he'll reload quickly.
A word of advice to my young Tigernet friends: don't miss the next few seasons. I smell something abrewin' in Tigertown that's gonna be d@mn well worth the price of admission!
