Stop with the Dabo playing Cade earlier would split the team

Dec 6, 2022, 9:33 AM

You can't tell me the WRs were happy with their lack of touches. The OL with the amount of sacks that weren't actually their fault. The RBs having to constantly run into a stacked box. The defense knowing they were not gonna be supported by the offense. Yes they respected him, but they all knew #### well who gave them a better chance to win and made theirs jobs 10x easier. Weren't the players chanting Cades name at the award ceremony? This whole bs spin about Dabo not being able to play Cade bc it would had fractured the lockerroom is complete and utter ####!

That was the 2nd game of the season, no one thinks Cade

Dec 6, 2022, 9:38 AM

Should have replaced DJ then! Dabo always wait 4+ games in.

David's article does not address everything . . .

Dec 6, 2022, 9:38 AM [ in reply to Re: Stop with the Dabo playing Cade earlier would split the team ]

that's material here. It is a great point he makes and it's not to be neglected, but again, it deals with lowest common denominator criticism . . . i.e. to use the source's phrasing, why he wasn't benched "after 20 passes," (i.e. prematurely). I have no problem taking that point heartily.

But that doesn't cover where things were at the mid or end-point of the season. As I posted elsewhere:

that one phrased "after 20 passes we are going to bench you." Sure, there is a certain contingent that wants these decisions made too quickly, w/o allowing a player time to settle in and get w/ the ebb and flow. But AGAIN, this tendency to lump all the fans in the same boat as the lowest common denominator fan is exactly what's gotten Dabo the persistent criticism. He's been busy rebutting the lowest common denominator, meanwhile, the folks with more reasonable expectations and timetables are the ones really making a solid case.

Also, there's a middle ground that's been missed here, which is that it didn't have to be about "benching DJ in favor of Cade" the whole time. It would have been plenty doable to get significant time in for Cade so that any decision could be based on more data. That way, DJ isn't simply "benched," and Cade isn't necessarily "the starter." I'm not saying this was Dabo's intent (b/c I don't think it was), but FUNCTIONALLY, Cade not getting significant time here and there (as a back-up) paved the way to justify continuing to give DJ the benefit of the doubt on the backdrop of inconsistency. Was Cade ready? No one could really say b/c there was no effort made to test those waters.

You benching DJ after the Wake game

Dec 6, 2022, 9:59 AM

or the 14 consecutive wins with him as starter?

It was not a simple decision

Re: You benching DJ after the Wake game

Dec 6, 2022, 10:06 AM

Exactly. DJ was starting to get onto Heisman watch lists leading into the Syracuse game. One could argue that Cade should've taken over as the starter after the Syracuse game, and the ND was bad for everyone. However, DJ then played good against both Louisville and Miami so it's not as if he was just consistently bad all year long or even during the entire 2nd half of the season or anything.

Now, I'm with a lot of people in wondering why we didn't turn to Cade at some point during the South Carolina game because they may very well have been the worst DJ has looked. Other than that, it's not this simple easy decision that many are making it out to have been.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simpler than some think . . .

Dec 6, 2022, 10:33 AM [ in reply to You benching DJ after the Wake game ]

not without it's complications and qualifications, to be sure, but not some huge, murky, intractable set of circumstances either.

First of all, I'm happy to factor in all the data, even that which is contra to those who wanted an earlier change. But it's interesting that you pick the Wake game. Dabo's MO was to mention the high points as if the low points didn't happen. I don't want to ignore the good, but I reject mentioning the good as simply a context-less distraction. The Wake game great, but the inconsistencies don't go away b/c of that (just as the Wake game doesn't go away b/c of the inconsistencies). It's both/and.

Reducing QB play to "wins" isn't a tenable analysis. We all know so much more goes into a win than just who plays QB. By this reasoning, DJ almost won the SC for Clemson . . . came w/in one point, right? But we all know that's not true. Clemson almost won the game , but the QB play didn't "almost" win it.

There's a lot to consider, but it's not reducible to 14 wins and an off-the cuff reference to a good game.

That’s funny, you came to mind immediately when I read lowest common denominator.

If Dabo and Streeter thought Cade could run the team earlier, he would have played. End of story.

So what? Cade ate some Wheaties before the ACCCG

Unfortunately, that is the story. DJ was starting period regardless and that was Dabos call. Streeter is just a parrot. Cade’s performance told the tale and made them both look like fools.

Agreed . . . we must remember that Hood's piece . . .

Dec 6, 2022, 9:42 AM

was from September, and was a defense of why DJ wasn't being benched really early on in the season. Given what transpired as the season went on, it's fifteen thousand percent irrelevant to the direction of the second half of the season.

Dec 6, 2022, 10:25 AM

There are an enormous number of opinions here presented as fact. Much of that is done to criticize the decisions to continue starting DJ. It is my opinion that Cade was desperately needed in the USuCk game. I can not with certainly claim that the outcome would have been different but I can neither claim that the outcome would not have been different.

You touched on that concept. Plainly said, one can only know that things would have been different had something in the past been changed but no one can know how much or whether that change would have been for the better or worse.
