Yes...I DO remember. I can see Swoffie holding that news conference and trying to act like he had such a strong grip on things. Meanwhile, UNC was setting up bogus classes for athletes to (not) attend.

It was reported when vote to tack on extra year by Swofford/ACC two schools walked one being Wake Forest did not vote along with another mbr school.

Instead of celebrating the success Clemson brought to the ACC, the other schools, especially the Fighting Swoffords, were green eyed envious, and did all they could to stamp out Clemson on the football field.

I believe that the ACC office received a lot of “Christmas” cards from Clemson fans that year. I also remember Tiger Band playing and Clemson fans singing “I’ll be home for Christmas, no bowl bid this year.” I also remember the song ending with “I’ll be home for Christmas singing Scr3w the ACC.”

The problem is not the probation handed out by the NCAA but, the additional year tacked on by the ACC. How many other conferences have tacked on additional penalties above and beyond what the NCAA levied? This is the same ACC that did nothing to UNC when their players did not attend class.

So at the end of the day what I hear is that Clemson doesn't owe this conference anything. And I agree. The protectionist philosophy (for the lack of a better term) Swofford used, set the conference back decades. When FSU and Ga Tech joined the rationale was that FSU would bolster the football while the ACC helped their basketball. And that's the way it worked, but it took years for FSU basketball to show any promise. Ga Tech won a NC (back when the vote was split between the AP and the UPI) and with Cremmins they competed in basketball. Va Tech never really lived up to their end, ditto Miami. The Louisville, Syracuse and Pitt additions were (IMO) purely basketball additions. And Boston College? really? Boston College? He went out and found schools that would compete, but not necessarily take the shine off the Big-4. If SWoffie really wanted to go all in on a basketball conference, he would have made Kentucky a deal. But that would have been too much of a risk for his beloved Heels.
In other words, the conference has continually been run as a basketball conference. Sure there have been years when football showed promise as a conference overall with several schools taking the lead at various times. But Clemson, at least in the last 10 years, has been toting the load. NC State wants to be a football school, but the fan base also longs for the days of Norm Sloan and Jim Valvano. And like most of the rest (other than UNC and Duke) they suffer from an identity crisis.
So I say so long ACC. It's been real and it's been fun, but it ain't been real fun.

didn’t parlay the 2 CFP National championships and the 6 CFP appearances ?
failed to emphasize football with member institutions?
couldn’t get the ACCN jump started and aired Duke BB, Everette Case, NC BB memories?
failed to promote its member institutions and let the SEC and B10 outmaneuver them from a publicity and marketing perspective?
moved conference championships from other venues(like Greenville) because it gave Clemson a competitive advantage while the men’s BB has been played in Greensboro 90% of the time?
acted/responded like a “Big Boy” conference? … neither do I
