Grade the Spring Game offense

Admittedly, I did not watch the entire game, but from what I saw:

C-

Not very good. Big struggles. Looked totally inept at time. Made the defense look really, really good.

Riley may end up being the Tommy Bowden of Clemson OC's. Had one good year at TCU (Bowden's good year was at Tulane). Hired for last name.

D+

The only reason it's not a failing grade is because Pearman is clearly a baller and will become the starter at some point this season and Antonio Williams looked great again.

O line the one that stood out to me the most was Sewell. He had a terrible day and made our D line look amazing.

I truly think the D line is that good but Georgia's will be too and if some of the lineman get off the ball slow it's gonna be a long season again.

Really think Pearman will ever start this season? I don't see Dabo making that move regardless of how things pan out.

D+ Without Pearman. B with Pearman.***

Qualifier: It was the spring game, which is not a real game but a highly controlled scrimmage. Quite a few of our best players did not play. Things may look very different this fall in real games. having said that ...

It looked an awful lot like last year's offense, which was not very good, and certainly not good enough to get us back to being an elite team that competes with the best teams in the country. Outside of a few bright spots (Wesco, Pearman, tight ends), I saw nothing to indicate any real progress has been made. Without significant improvement, UGA will destroy us come 8/31.

One good year at TCU?

First: Our defense is really, really, good!!!

Second: I seem to recall people on this board wanting a very vanilla performance, not giving anything away. Well, looks like we got some of that and now we’re still finding things to pick at and complain about. This is a terrible look for our fanbase. It’s no wonder the media has such a great time at our expense!!! We provide them with a lot of their material. Stop all the nonsense and support our team.

no other way to grade it with the rules, split squads and # of guys out

most of these spring games look the same - D has a clear advantage. Trevor had decent stats but was the starting qb on the losing team 30-10 to chase brice in his last spring game. The only thing a coach can takeaway are some individual assessments on guys who don't normally play. They already know all they need to know about guys who have already started/played a bunch of snaps in real action. You're certainly not expecting or looking for continuity and consistency in drives - no way you can expect or get that.

They have TV's in Athens, Georgia ya'll.
Why show your whole playbook?
Why give an already outstanding opponent some good things to scheme up?
Why?

Split squads!
Veterans who didn't play; who would be playing and making a difference.
Remember, an OL doing their thing is like a well-orchestrated dance, they have to be on the same page and working together. You can't have that with broken-up rosters who haven't practiced together!

Relax and trust that this was more about the young players getting time in front of a crowd against other elite players. The video will be to see how those new starters reacted when put in certain situations.
Sometimes they were put in a bad position "on purpose"!

Some coaches want to see it "how it's going to be"! I think Dabo maybe used to be that way. But, now is more about wanting to see how the new starters will react to pressure as much as possible.
It's certainly going to give some good indication as to who "has a lot of work left" and "who is close and just needs to refine". Possibly, even show some new starters or Freshmen "who already get it"!

Evaluations! < - -- - word that keeps ringing to me.

B-. I was really upset initially, but I thought the 2nd half was much better. Not sure if the defensive talent was was down in the second, but I like to see that we move the ball on a few drives.

Dabo's recipe for fielding an elite team has an elite defense, solid special teams, and an elite difference maker at QB.

I think the defense is once again going to be Top 10 or maybe Top 5.

I think Hauser is going to be the answer to our kicking game problems. He looked really good on all 3 field goals and hit a 49 yarder!

The missing piece is at QB. This is Cade's 3rd year at Clemson and 2nd under Riley. He again was putting the ball in danger Saturday. I think the interception was the fault of the receiver running the wrong route, but there was another couple of plays where the DBs got their hands on the ball. He should have progressed a lot more than he has at this point. Same can be said of Vizzina as he showed us nothing Saturday. Pearman was the guy showing the poise and ability to move the offense.

I must say I agree with Plyler on Pearman in that he COULD be Clemson's version of Stetson Bennett and if he is he should play.

I honestly thought they looked better than the previous spring games of 22 and 23. Should be much improved when playing with a full deck. Mafah out along with numerous receivers. The oline should be better when August rolls around . Hard to judge them when split in to 2 groups. Cade has to improve. I think he will with better line and receiver play.

guess it depends on the grading scale being used..........

if A+ = 2018 Offense

and

F = 2010/2021 offense

then

D / D+ range
