Costco CEO: Raise The Minimum Wage!

Costco CEO: Raise The Minimum Wage To More Than $10 Per Hour
The Huffington Post | By Bonnie Kavoussi
Posted: 03/06/2013 11:10 am EST |

President Barack Obama wants to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 per hour. And the CEO of one of America's largest retailers says such a move would be good for workers and businesses alike. In fact, he says raise it even more.

On Tuesday, Costco CEO and President Craig Jelinek came out in support of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013, which aims to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, then adjust it after that for inflation.

"At Costco, we know that paying employees good wages makes good sense for business," Jelinek said in a statement. "We pay a starting hourly wage of $11.50 in all states where we do business, and we are still able to keep our overhead costs low."

"An important reason for the success of Costco’s business model is the attraction and retention of great employees," Jelinek added. "Instead of minimizing wages, we know it's a lot more profitable in the long term to minimize employee turnover and maximize employee productivity, commitment and loyalty. We support efforts to increase the federal minimum wage."

Raise minimum wage, cost of living goes up to adjust, but the cost of living will actually go higher, so the end result will be an overall net LOSS for those making minimum wage.

Got my vote. If we are going to have a minimum wage,

Mar 7, 2013, 12:45 AM

I say go to about $15 / hour and eliminate the earned income credit and raise the bar for nutritional suppliments (food stamps), which would eliminate the cashless and dependent mentality we are imposing on wage and hour workers now. Hotel and restaurant prices are subsidised by the artificially low wages, and we need to stop this. We are keeping an entire class of people dependent on the govt at the price of $70 hotel rooms and $3 hamburgers. Thank you tboy.

if we're going to raise it, raise it enough so that it

Mar 7, 2013, 9:30 AM

applies to me. let's make it like $250 an hour. :)

FAT TAX NOW!

Costco sounds cocky, but would they

Mar 7, 2013, 3:37 AM

make their starting wage even higher. They say their starting wage is $3.75 over the minimum wage right now. If the minimum wage was raised to $10.10 would they bump their wage up to $13.85 to make them look as good as they do now?

Sure would be a good way to offset QE 1, 2, 2.5, and 3

Mar 7, 2013, 5:47 AM

by giving a good little boost to inflation. However, unlike food and gas, it would show up in the inflation numbers and things could get ugly.

I would support this under one circumstance.

Benefits from .Gov cannot exceed minimum wage at 2080 hours of labor.

Costco already pays its employees 15 per hour, so why should they object to their competitors, like walmart, having to tighten their margins?

there was a good documentary on costco a while back, says they basically break even on their merchandise and their profit margin comes from the membership fees.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Then look for their membership fees to increase 33%***

The level of quality in an employee you get in a market

Mar 7, 2013, 10:14 AM [ in reply to Re: Costco CEO: Raise The Minimum Wage! ]

at $11.50 an hour with a minimum wage of $7.25 is a higher quality employee than you can get paying $11.50 an hour with a minimum wage of $10.10. The guy says he credits their higher quality employees they get because they pay $4.25 an hour more than minimum wage. That quality differential will shrink when Costco suddenly pays it's employees $1.40 above minimum wage.

The overall quality of their employees will decrease by roughly a third. The cost of the goods they buy from suppliers will also increase, making it hard for them to offset the pay gap with even higher wages to keep the quality of their employees high at the new minimum wage.

Re: The level of quality in an employee you get in a market

Mar 7, 2013, 10:19 AM

Why should the quality change? They will have more to sift through because of the rise in unemployment but the supply should not change, just the quantity supplied at that price point.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At $11.50/hr you can hire a much better employee than you

Mar 7, 2013, 10:33 AM

can for $7.25/hr. You get an employee with an expanded skill set. more education, more experience, etc. When McDonald's starts paying their burger flippers $10.10 an hour, employees with the least skills can then get a job for $10.10, meaning that the advantage in employee quality Costco currently has paying $11.50 decreases.

I see your point that increased unemployment will offset that differential, but I don't think an increase in minimum wage will effect unemployment nearly enough to offset the 33% increase in wages. The cost will just be passed on right on up the chain. If an increase in wages caused massive job loss, then the price of goods would not increase. But they do, and they will. Inflation, in this situation, will prevent loss of jobs, but with that inflation comes the reality that there's no net benefit to the worker other than the number on his paycheck. He will pay significantly more for the burger he is flipping and the quality of his economic standing will remain unaffected. But he will keep his job.

It's still just artificial inflation

Mar 7, 2013, 10:06 AM

Hats off to Costco for figuring out a business model that pays above minimum wage. Paying the burger flipper at McDonalds $11.50 an hour will not make them suddenly a great employee. Costco is actually enjoying an advantage by paying the higher wage BECAUSE the minimum wages others are paying nets them better employees at a higher wage. The quality of Costco's $11/hr employees will fall off when everyone else has to pay that wage. Plus, the overhead costs will go up a proportionate amount as well, as the cost of goods they sell produced by minimum wage labor climb.

I hope Mr. Costco CEO has a plan to pay his current $11.50/hr workers $14.50 an hour and deal with more expensive overhead costs.

In the end, Costco loses a market advantage and we all pay more.

Re:Minimum Wage. A Payoff to Unions And Government Depend

Mar 7, 2013, 11:20 AM

Dr. Walter Williams has written extensively on how minimum wage laws hurt youth and the poor--even in good economic times. A search of his writings on the subject may be useful.

For those who wish to focus attention on the progressive "tool" of minimum wage legislation, the writings of Dr. Hans Sennholz may be helpful. Sennholz died in 2007, but his credentials as an economic scholar, professor, writer, and educator qualify him as an authority on this subject and many more related topics. Review his record, and his articles.

A much more comprehensive history of the subject, however, which includes Dr. Sennholz's research and conclusions on minimum wage considerations is available in his 1983 article.

The article is entitled: "Minimum Wage: How political attempts to boost wages tend to harm those most apt to be unemployed." by Hans F. Sennholz - In The Freeman/Ideas on Liberty, May 1983, pp. 270-281

His concluding paragraph::

"But the most vociferous support of minimum wage legislation comes from the professional spokesmen of the poor. Some may actually welcome unemployment among minorities because it breeds other political and economic effects and, above all, creates a political power base for the minority champions. When jobs are scarce they are likely to be rationed and allocated according to government plans and programs. Rationing bestows benefits to political constituents and thus confers prestige and power to the program proponents.* O Some are also aware that unemployment tends to give rise to new demands for radical government intervention, for central control and planning, which may pave the way for an all-round political command system, called socialism. Mass unemployment, they are hoping, will lead voters to support their ultimate objective."

Hey TB98....to further illustrate Tiggity's and others

Mar 7, 2013, 1:45 PM

points above. Imagine you are the manager of a company with 50 employees at the following pay rates:
A) 10 @ $8/hr
B) 15 @ $9/hr
C) 20 @ $10/hr
D) 5 @ $13/hr

The minimum wage goes to $11/per hour. Those cats in group A are happy as can be. But what about the guys in group B,C and D? Just what are you going to do when these guys come grumbling to you saying "It's not fair to us if we don't get a raise too". Are you going to give them a $3 /hr raise also?

Oh...keep in mind that you are also responsible for the profitability of your company. If you raise your labor costs are you also going to raise the prices of your goods/services to offset that loss of profit? What are going to do?
