OK, lacrosse experts

Feb 15, 2023, 5:30 PM

What are the expectations for this program?

Lacrosse is not softball or basketball. Not as many elite players on the women’s side. That limited quantity of elite players is why only a handful of teams dominate all women’s sports and why women’s sports have less parity, but this will be magnified even more in lacrosse. Tons of high schools have softball and basketball, but not lacrosse.

The ACC is also, as usual in Olympic sports and especially women’s sports, a dominant league.

So what are the expectations for the first few seasons? A winning record on the field and finishing higher than last place in the ACC? By year 5 competing for the top half of the ACC?

Would love input from those that know something about women’s lacrosse.

Thanks

IF They have CLEMSON emblazoned on their uniforms .... I’m all in!

But I know very little about lacrosse and I’m curious as to the realistic expectations for this program especially years one through five from those that actually know about college lacrosse.

Being a brand new sport, I don’t think you can have expectations for this year.

The ACC is the premier lacrosse conference for both men and women.

With that said, our coach did very well as a player and a coach, and has recruited well at Clemson so far in terms of high school players and transfers.

We won our first game, 23-1 over Wofford.

We intend to compete this year, and I believe we will. This team will make Clemson proud.

Seriously?

There are always expectations. If there were no expectations, you wouldn’t even play. We have a successful coach. We have a brand in Clemson. We’re in the best Olympic sport conference. The best lacrosse conference. We have I think one player that was a top 20 national recruit coming out of high school. we have transfers from other good programs. No expectations? I know you’re not dumb. You’re an intelligent guy. That was a dumb comment!

We were picked last in the Acc

But the fact that we have outscored out opponents 42-4 so far makes me believe we can spring some surprises. Those type of extreme blowout scores aren’t normal

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m well aware of where the media picked us.

Feb 15, 2023, 9:17 PM

But the media is full of idiots. I think when you look at our brand. This conference. The coach we hired. The kids we got out of high school and our transfers. I would think a losing record overall unless the conference schedule makes up 90% of the schedule would be a big disappointment. I would think finishing last in the ACC would be a big disappointment.

There are people on here that have some inside sources. I have the inside source of the Clemson. But I’m not in tune with the lacrosse program. There are some people on here that are. So I was curious as to the internal expectations are as well as what people are saying around Clemson.

Two ACC teams played for the national championship last yr. (UNC defeated BC, and is a perennial power.) It should be much more difficult to replicate softball's program start.

I saw UNC is considered the preseason number one team

And favorite to win the national championship. Incredible that UNC and Boston College had such a battle in the championship game last year. BC lost by one point. Talk about a heartbreaker. The way scoring is so crazy in lacrosse. It’s a shame it’s not like tennis where you have to win decisively.

For the record, I was not even remotely comparing this program to softball.

Feb 15, 2023, 9:23 PM [ in reply to Re: OK, lacrosse experts ]

Lacrosse is growing in the south, but it’s not huge like softball. In fact, baseball is second only to football in the south. Baseball is in the south is like basketball in the NC and the Midwest.

But there are expectations. I would love to know what they are within the Clemson athletic department for year one then years 3 to 5. As well as what people are saying around campus and town.

I’m thinking that they will be very competitive and end the season with a winning record. The Clemson brand will draw great players. Also believe that good players will be drawn to the idea of a lot of PT early on in their college careers with it being a new program.

My 16 yo son left baseball last year to focus on lacrosse and football. He was a great baseball player but likes the contact sports and action. He had played lacrosse from ages 6-10, focused on travel baseball for four years, and then went back once he entered high school. His main reason for going back to lacrosse was to cross-train for football but he has excelled and loves it, even made a high level travel team. We are in the Raleigh area where lacrosse is very competitive and a popular high school sport for both boys and girls. I have grown to love the action, strategy, and physicality of the boys game. We sure hope Clemson has an NCAA men’s team one day although the D1 MCLA is very competitive and fun to watch.

For those of you who have never seen a live high school or college lacrosse game, I would suggest that you attend one this spring. We attended the Duke vs ND men’s game last year and I would have to say that it was one of the most exciting college sporting events that I have ever experienced. It’s the oldest team sport in North America and growing fast!

Cautious Optimism . . .

Is my expectation until we hit the ACC portion of our Schedule . . . Let’s revisit this thread then . . .

I watched the first match . . . We guarded well . . . We were physical near both nets . . . We cut well and moved well on offense . . . These gals can find the net too . . .

How do we compare to nationally competitive teams??? . . . I haven’t a clue . . . But I do know . . . They are a fun watch!!!
