greenhouses in eastern NC. An Alberta Clipper came through on Christmas Day. Some of my plastic worked loose in the high wind and I tried to nail some strips over it to hold it down. The plastic shattered like glass! And, I made the mistake of sticking some nails in my mouth. They froze to my lips and I had to go inside and wait for them to thaw and drop off. I lost a lot of plants that night. The diesel fuel got so cold that it wouldn't pump through the filters. My furnaces shut down around 7am...after I had babysat them all night. I had gone home around 6:30am thinking I had gotten my crops through the night. I'll never forget that sickening smell of thawing plants when I opened the doors around noon.
I think it was 6 degrees Christmas night, along with 30-40mph winds. I'm sure many of you have been in MUCH colder. So have I (in Canada). But that one is the most memorable and costly for me.

Early 70s, duck hunting on the Cooper River. Boat motor quit just before dusk. 19⁰ that night on an island. We had a fire, but still couldn't stay warm.
As far as temp, Christmas Eve of 2022 here in Fancy Gap VA was -9⁰.

10-4 on that. For me duck hunting off hwy 402 in a little creek that drains into the upper cooper. Went in canoe and had to bust the ice with the paddle to get to the spot. Everything was solid white ice. Shot two teal that morning but thought I was gonna lose my feet.

I was stuck on a mountain top with my troops in Bosnia and the road was completely iced over. It was so cold; and they had no way up to relieve us... so, we slept in the snow and ice with black trash bags over our sleeping bags to keep them dry. Next day I had some soldiers kick down what used to be a barn that had been blown up and used the wood to burn and stay warm. Also on the second day we dug a big hole large enough for all of us to fit in and put a tarp over the hole, inside the hole went a foot down with out with our shovels and ...about 18 inches into the side of the foxhole... iInside the foxhole we ran a pipe we found up out of the foxhole and had a fire inside to avoid the wind and snow. "We all survived" in all my deployments Bosnia is the coldest #### place on earth.

Three years in Anchorage. My buddies and I would go snowmobiling at an old trapper's cabin in the mountains above the big Copper river. One morning it was 32 below zero when we got gas in Glenallen - and we went up into the mountains from there. Only got hypothermic once, though - fishing the big Susitna drainage in 60 degree weather - but the water was about 32. Got woozy, buddy pulled me out before I went under. made me dance around a big fire.

duck hunting in my younger days, when wading in ice covered waters waste high didn't seem to bother me until I made the fatal misstep into a hole, sinking over the top of my chest waders. At this point the purpose became two-fold, first don't drop the shotgun and get back to higher ground.
Even though I was fortunate enough to get to higher ground with my shotgun and with only some water in my waders, the next 4 hours of the duck hunt were painfully cold. It took two days before I felt some of my extremities.

I agree
Mid March a few years back my son was playing Little league baseball
It was a nice 70 plus day
I had on a shirt and a short sleeve wind shirt and shorts
About the second inning the wind picked up and in about 30 minutes the temp had dropped to 40 degrees and the wind constant and sun down
Got the shivers-bad!
Had to go into heated bathroom between innings
Since then on i have always had rain gear and extra clothes and coats in the truck to layer up or down as the weather changed at his games and tournaments!

Montana two years ago… -28, with -58 real feel…. Ran emergency heat in our air BnB, but temps dipped to 46 inside, system couldn’t handle it… we were out there this week and left before the low -30’s set in and real feel near -60.…winds made it almost unbearable…

Ski left in Montana. 30° below zero windchill. After we made a run, they closed the lifts because it was too dangerous. I probably had on six layers, and still felt like I was freezing to death.

Snow skiing trip to Snowshoe, WV. Got in a blizzard around the VA state line and most people exited the interstate for the night. We pushed on. By the time we exited at midnight, it took another 2.5 hours to get up the mountain. Snow covered roads by that point with no tire tracks. We were the trailblazer. Got to the condo and a few hours of sleep before getting up the next morning to find 13 below zero, blizzard still going on, and visibility of about 10 feet. We went out and amazingly, the slopes were open and the lifts were operating. We practically had the whole mountain to ourselves and just a few other crazy people.

Skiing outside Banff several years ago. First day mid 20s - great. Next day mid 10s - still good. By our last day was 22 below. Made one run and gave it up. Body was warm - feet freezing. Next morning left to return home in minus 45 deg. These were all actual temps in deg F. However, it was really good Skiing until the last day.

The white mountains of New Hampshire in late Jan early Feb years ago. We backpacked and snowshoed in for 8 miles. It was only problematic when you had to use the bathroom.
Then again to -20 on ski trip in Jackson Hole, WY a few years back. Thankfully they had a temperature inversion event where it was above zero once up high enough on the ski trails.

Galena Alaska when I was stationed there in the Air Force. Just remember it was so cold one day the SPs came to the barracks to drive me to my work station. Didn’t want anyone outside. Those guys were actually doing taxi service for us that day. Another time here in Chicago in January of 82? Maybe 83 It hit -27 with wind chills in the -70s. Was having a wedding reception at our house and the transformer blew just down the street. Had about 60 guests but luckily all stayed warm without any heat or lights. Very miserable evening but everyone was ok.
Today is not much better as it was -13 with -36 windchill when I got up. Not improving much for about 3 more days. Had to go out and remove last night’s snow fall from the driveway.

Back in the 80's we lived in Houston, TX and always enjoyed the warm winters there. However, One year we had a "Blue Norther" blow in and had a four-day high of 18 degrees. Houses were built there with little insulation and all the pipes froze. It was a disaster of epic proportions. 2 Million people with damage of one sort or the other and plumbers were flying in from everywhere to help. Our home had multiple pipes burst and when the water came back on, it was like a waterworks show, flowing out of our walls, flooding everything in the home.

Snowshoe. Late 70’s or early 80’s. Minus 22 or so with wind chill to minus 60. They let us ski with the proviso we came inside after each run. Got ready to leave. Gas line frozen. There was a service station right next to the lodge. He towed people inside and thawed out gas line for 75 bucks. A lot of money for a student back then.

at Clemson. We went tubing down the Chatooga river, ending at the place where they filmed the big hydraulic scene in Deliverance. It was about 95 degrees out, but the WATER temperature was not even 50. Any part of your body that actually touched the water off that inner tube got cold, REAL quick. We actually chilled our six packs of adult beverages just by letting them float in the water, tied to the tubes. We spent about three hours in the water, and I was so whipped that by the time we got back to our apartment (three Chem E's sharing an apartment that last summer session) I collapsed and fell asleep on my face right there on the carpeted floor in front of the tv. Woke up a couple hours later, and had a helluva time just rolling over and sitting up. Both my arms, lying under me, had gone to sleep!

Stranded with a broken down, frozen vehicle in feet of snow. I was taken in by some very friendly people in Willard, OH outside of Cleveland.
The coldest I've ever been. Numb hands, feet, and cheeks. Couldn't stop shivering. So find that my eyes hurt.
The Good Samaritans got the vehicle fixed at no charge. One of them was a very good mechanic.
They wouldn't let me pay for anything...meals, a guest bedroom in one of their homes, nada. Not to mention a 45-minute hot shower to thaw me out, then coffee by their roaring fireplace.
I'll never forget their kindness.
I know we make fun of Ohio (especially in the Low Country) but those folks were among the most hospitable I've ever run across. Truly great people!

The high for 2 weeks was -20. We didn't miss a day of school. But we were dressed for it.
Coldest I ever felt was Korat Thailand 1970. I was probably in the low 40s, but our hootches had no heat and were 16" off the ground. I was in sweat shirt and pants under 2 army blankets and my teeth were chattering so hard I couldn't sleep.

As mentioned above, duck hunting. Specifically, in a duck blind, the owner called the Waccamaw Hilton.
4:30 in the morning, temperature in the teens, wind whipping off the water, and a nice drizzle to top it all off.
Some of my favorite memories spending time with my dad.

almost three years on overseas military duty in northern Germany and in the high mountains on the DMZ in Korea, at least six months each year freezing my caboose off.
When I returned stateside, I vowed to never cross the Mason Dixon line again. So what happens? My son married a gal from Pittsburgh, Pa, and my vow was quickly shot to helllll! lol
I do remember enough about that cold that six degrees would have seemed like a warm spell. And snow and ice were always accompanied in both locations with field maneuvers, making shots of whiskey and cigars at night luxuries!

In Jan. 1977 which at the time was the coldest month in recorded
weather history I lived that month in a 1 room log cabin on the top
of Windsor Mt. in western Mass. It was built with "green" logs and
was not properly caulked so you could see between the logs! I was
able to wrap the whole camp in clear, thick plastic to keep out the
drafts. It had a small franklin coal stove that I burned wood in but I
had to cut it really small and of course it burn up really fast. I would
load it up when I had enough wine and herb in me to make me sleepy,
and sleep in a down bag with long undies on. I will always remember
seeing the thermometer(farthest point from stove) read 70* and in
the morning anywhere from 20* above to 20* below zero. No lie !! I
had to shovel the room 3 times that month, and a plow came every
week so I could get the 6 miles to the paved road that went to Pitts-
field where I went to the "Y" and played hoops, and then got my shower.
Cabin had no working plumbing so outhouse but don't dare sit down,
just hover above the seat. I think going thru experiences such as that
play a part in making the man....Doc

Jan 1984, Bad Hersveld, West Germany. We pulled the engine out of our M60-A3 tank. Our Tank Commander, a Staff Sargent, had me and another private standing in the empty engine bay scraping out/washing out who knows how many years of oil and grease and dirt. Something like 5 hours worth. Eventually we were standing knee deep in water. By the end I couldn’t feel anything below my knees which made it incredibly difficult to walk back to the barracks and my hands didn’t work any more either. Warming up was extremely painful too.

Ha Ha ! The ‘88 Liberty Bowl in Memphis. I was in the navy, going to school at a naval training base in Millington, TN ( spittin’ distance to Memphis. The Liberty Bowl never sold out so it was customary for them to just give the remaining tickets to sailors going to the technical schools over there. Most of them were poor, fresh out of bootcamp kids stuck there for the holidays anyway.
I was home on leave at my parents house in Columbia when one of my classmates who had misidentified me as a Gamecock fan called me to inform he had flashed his ID and secured a couple of tickets for me. The rest of my family are all dyed in the wool Gamecock fans so I thanked him and decided to take my older sister to the game.
Holy crap, it was frigid that night and the wind just ripped ! I parked my pickup and as we walked toward the stadium I was taunted by some coots with a BBQ grill on a trailer who had obviously noted my Clemson bumper stickers, “Hey boy, where’d ya park your tractor ?” Another one yelled, “I turned Danny in !” I replied they need not ever worry as the NCAA didn’t bother to investigate losers.
Memphis winters can be a really wet, nasty kind of cold and this was a record one. Indiana’s team showed up with parkas like the Green Bay Packers and sideline furnaces. The coots attempted to tough out the cold in their old fishnet jerseys. Hey, what did they know about post season football ?
Old Joe Morrison was a little more prepared. He shivered on the sideline in his trademark black windbreaker. A handful of the chickens emerged from the locker room for the second half wearing sweatshirts and hoodies of various odd colors underneath their jerseys.
Indiana beat the chicken crap out of them that night and I made my sister suffer to the final whistle. When we got back to my truck those losers with the BBQ grill were already long gone. I imagine they had kept with their own custom and bailed at halftime. 😄

Might have been in McAdenville NC a few weeks back had the smart idea of keeping the shorts I had from school on. It got up to 60 during the day so I thought I would be fine. Froze

Back in the winter of 1977, I was running my morning paper routes in my 1972 VW Beatle when I ran out of gas. It was 5:00am and about 15 degrees outside, and I had to walk about a mile to my parent's house for a gallon of gas. By the time I got back to the car, my hands were so cold I couldn't open the gass can. I say in the car with my hands down my pants to warm them up.
