Clone running question

Jul 11, 2012, 3:09 PM

Let's say you go "run" a 5k. But you don't really run the whole 5k. I mean, you make it 5k but you run, jog, walk. Jog, walk, walk, jog, run, walk, etc. You finish though.

Did you really run a 5k? Is this frowned upon by the runsters?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just say you were in a 5k.***

One of the biggest names in running...

Jul 11, 2012, 3:12 PM

Jeff Galloway (1972 Olympian) has a running system called Run Walk Run. He says you wind up not being as tired, never getting injured etc.

The "serious" runners (HS/College types who are competitive) probably sneer but the other 99% of runners at a 5K don't care. You're out there and doing it.

What really twists your noodle, is when you're doing your normal pace...8 min mile or so, and one of these run walkers pass you. Then you figure it is for real.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

8 min pace in a 5k?

Jul 11, 2012, 3:14 PM

Come on Clone, I thought you were a BAMF runner

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm about 7 mins in a 5K for my personal best.

Jul 11, 2012, 3:21 PM

7:45 for a half

My goal pace is about 8:20 for a full.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

7 mins for 5k?

Jul 11, 2012, 3:22 PM

i thought you ran a lot....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

by comparison...no not really.***

confused.. so a run walker ends up with a faster pace?***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yup. Some have sub 3 hr marathons.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

so sprint for a bit, walk for a bit?***

Jul 11, 2012, 3:26 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

how well does this method work if you just run for exercise?

Jul 11, 2012, 3:29 PM [ in reply to Yup. Some have sub 3 hr marathons.*** ]

better to just run non-stop? or no difference really? or you dont know and i should just ask bing?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He says its even better...

Jul 11, 2012, 3:34 PM

resting causes you to be able to recover faster, go longer, with less chance of injury.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ive never even thought about training for a marathon, but

Jul 11, 2012, 3:45 PM

this has me intrigued. His training for a marathon basically just has you run for 30 min twice during the week and then big runs on sundays. I always just assumed training for a marathon invovled running 58 miles a week.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hal Higdon (other Marathon coach) has runs 5 days a week

Jul 11, 2012, 3:47 PM

rest one day and cross-train on the other. It gets hard when you have family obligations. Also, the Furman University FIRST program has alot less days of running while training.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I cannot see this, qualifying for Boston while walking some.

Jul 11, 2012, 3:44 PM [ in reply to Yup. Some have sub 3 hr marathons.*** ]

Bottles my mind, but I have not tried it. It's all I can do to approach 3:30, and I run my a$$ off.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You people amuse me with your running talk.
